Behavior Modification: What is it???
Behavior Modification is the desire to change a current behavior to a more desired behavior. Through identification of the behavior, collection of baseline observations, and a team of people who want the child to succeed, a plan can be set into place to try to change the behavior. Take a look at this overview of behavior modification, and some suggestions that you can use when creating your own behavior plans: http://www.ldonline.org/article/Behavior_Modification_in_the_Classroom
Also check out the OSEP Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at http://www.pbis.org/ . Positive Behavioral Supports was "established by the Office of Special Education Programs, US Department of Education to give schools capacity-building information and technical assistance for identifying, adapting, and sustaining effective school-wide disciplinary practices." Their plans are used by schools as a system of response when behavior intervention is necessary.
Also, check out these attached documents. They come from The Solution Book: A Guide to Classroom Discipline by Randall Sprick and identifies the classroom problem, causes, a goal for changed behavior, and a plan to implement in the class. The behaviors I picked out are "Not Completing Homework/ Leaving Homework at Home" and "Nose Picking" ( hey - that can be a problem too!) You should be able to open them in the attachment box below.
One last resource, in the old school type of way, is a book called the Pre-Referral Intervention Manual (PRIM). This book has many intervention strategies listed for different behavior problems in the classroom. This is a book that I value as a good classroom resource. There are many helpful ideas for intervening with difficult behaviors. Here is a brief description of the book: http://www.hes-inc.com/hes.cgi/00670.html, but check it out next time you are at a bookstore!
