Our team has created the following Learning Activities to assist students with their project:
Week 4 - Technology Based Learning Activities
Summary of Project:
Students will execute a travel agency project on a World War II battle site. The students will produce either a brochure or a web site using basic computer tools.
Teachers will need to to be taught in some software tools in bringing some of these tools together. Teachers will create a sample project themselves in order to gain an understanding and show they can provide instruction in the technical aspects of the lesson. Teachers will need to be aware of both the course requirements and the technology requirements.
Students with hearing impairments can assist in working with digital images and developing text integration. Students that are hearing impaired can help develop audio for the projects.
Projects can be put graded by a rubric in regards to the development of the project.
Students who are gifted and talented should be assigned a part of the lesson that would required the most researching. I agree with Mike on assigning the hearing impaired student researching digital images/videos and the blind student being in charge of the audio development, maybe like a director of the audio recording.
The assignment this week is to create "technology based learning activities". Am I to assume that we need examples for both student projects and examples for a professional development for the teachers.(Alexis) That is my belief. It seems that we are assigned to create an example of the project to provide to the teacher.
Scenario - We are modeling and designing technology integration into a High School level World History class that is covering a unit on World War II. We will design the complete integration process using the student collaborative project as a guideline.
Project Examples and Rubrics -
1. Students will collaborate on a travel agency simulation. In order to successfully accomplish our goal of integration we will need the following completed:
Examples of a website and brochure provided to students (http://michaelcwarren.net/historic_travels/)
Students could integrate images, videos, audio tour guides, maps or any other resource that would advertise or describe the details of their tour.
2. History Department will participate in a professional development plan to gain skills and ideas to be successful.
Introducing Teacher Resources (Professional Development Plan) - A professional development plan and brochure example that would be supportive and ongoing for the History department. In this professional development we would focus on collaborative learning, specific technology skills related to the project, and the UDL philosophy. I would design the professional development based on principals learned in Web 2.0 Chapter 5 and the McREL initiative.
Professional Development Plan can be viewed at the following wiki http://edld5364silar.wikispaces.com/Professional+Development+for+Group+Assignment.
I thought about adding helpful websites (D-Day museum), examples of finished projects (utube), and tutorials (Google Maps).
UDL Lesson Plan - (Tina) Once we decide how this is going to look I can work on the UDL Lesson Plan. I may need help from Michael with TEKS and some other resources, but I will be glad to get the main information together. (Alexis) I can also assist in developing the lesson plan.(Susan) I would also like to help with the lesson plan.
Assessments -(Alexis???) Once the students have completed their travel agency of the different events/sites in the World World II and created a podcast, we could create an online assessment test using the students' findings. The assessment can be made on UDL Book Builder website so that it can supply audio assistance for the student who is blind. I can create an example of this assessment.(Susan) I could make a rubric, once we decide on the criteria that we want to assess. (Tina) I also think we should do a survey to assess the project from the students point of view. (Alexis) I created a survey using Survey Monkey for the students to fill out their point of views on the project along with answering a couple of questions concerning the material. I will also create a PowerPoint on Google Docs on how to do this for the teacher. I have also created a wiki for the students to use to summary all of the information from the project and also to reflect in greater detail about the project itself.
Shared Bookmarking-(Susan)-What topics do we want the students to research? I am working on our bookmarking site for our students/teacher to list research. Also, I was thinking that I could make our students/teacher a shared calendar in www.calendars.net of activities. Here is our calendar http://my.calendars.net/EDLD5364Group13 Feel free to edit as needed.
Susan-Here is our Bookmarking site http://delicious.com/EDLD5364Group13
Let me know if I need to change or add more information and if you like it.
(Tina) - Nice job Susan. Would students be able to add resources for their peers to this type of site?

Alexis - Here is the powerpoint presentation with the directions on how to use the Survey Monkey website http://docs.google.com/present/edit?id=0AWkm35Y3oGymZGRzbXhrcmtfMnR2OHZ3Z2Q&hl=en

Project Discussion: (Alexis, Mike, Susan, Tina) Mike had a great idea of creating a travel related site to discuss the different battles from World War II. After some discussion it was decided that the students would create a travel agency that would provide a tour describing the details of the location of specific World War II battles. We decided to create a bookmarking site for the students to use for the researching that is required for this project. The bookmarking site will also assist the teacher in providing students with helpful resources. We have also decided to have the travel brochure focus on people traveling in present time to the sites that where involved during the World War II period. The students are going to discuss the events that occurred at these places.
