These days, I find the injuries from forty odd winters (and that one romantic summer) in my legs don't deal so well with uphills anymore. In fact, I first thought I had developed an allergy to uphills, what with little red spots developing on my forehead. The doc however said it was just the sucker-marks left by my navel, and recommend walking faster to cure it.
Hence my idea to enter the the Elandsvalley Marathon. It drops some 500 metres and traverses that small part of Middleveld between the old Godwana's Highveld and Ngdowana in the Lowveld.
Veteran runners say you are near the finish when everyone starts looking at each other funny. The smell however, comes from the chemical reactions of billions of lil' lygnosulphonates at Sappi's paper mill, not the sweaty athletes around you. Because it is downhill and pretty quick as marathons go, lots of athletes enter. So book your spot and bed early in The Runner's Hut.
