After yet another Monday rainout, and the third rainout this season of the match-ups between white & green, black & red, and purple & blue, I was hoping we could reschedule those matchups on Monday, July 28th. That is the Monday after Wildwood, which I normally schedule as pickup instead of league games because attendance is often very light. Unfortunately, two captains have already surveyed their teams and said they will not have enough players available to play, so we are sticking with pickup on July 28th.
Tonight's games were hotly contested, and the early game prompted a modification of our universe point timing regulations.
The early game pitted Black Sheep versus White in a slug fest. Both teams traded points and both were up at one point or another. The game ended in a universe point that lasted for about twenty minutes. Both teams played great defense and forced multiple turns. Dan Fisherman finally caught the winning score for Black Sheep, 11-10. The length of that universe point severely impacted the start of the next game. The captains discussed this with me and we have added a new U-point timing restriction to our league rules. Effective from now on:
If universe point is still being played ten minutes past hard cap, the game immediately ends in a tie. Universe point is not to extend past that time.
Once the second game finally got underway, Beets led the Green Beans 8-2 at half, with green making valiant efforts that weren’t reflected in the score. When purple took a timeout in the second half, green had clawed back to score 3 more points in a row and boost their morale. Alex and Matt had most of green’s points but Beats lived up to their name to get the win. 13-7 purple victory.
In the late game we had a thriller between bREaD and Blues Clues. The wind had picked up, leading to many turns in the game but both teams fought through. Red decided to get crafty and decided to SET (bread pun) zone. After starting the game going down 0-2, blue's zone offense started to come together thanks to Keegan, Paloma, and newly acquired Leo. The score at half was 8-6 blue, but that didnt stop bREaD from rising (another pun) to the challenge. After scores were exchanged, including a honey point from Mirsad to Corinna, cap was approaching with Blue receiving the disc up 10-9 and a chance to hold for the win. After a blue turn, red's chilly offense with great movement from Jimi, Caro, MV and Dr B was capped off by a nice grab from Dean. One more universe point - everyone's favorite. Blue received the pull, worked it up the field and then turned but was able to get the disc back after some solid defense. Blue worked it up the field with a score from Bobby to Barry to end the game 11-10 blue.
The Black Sheep win over White gives them a one game lead over White in the standings, and Black also continues to hold the tie break between the two teams. Beets and Blues Clues wins gave Beets a two game lead for 3rd place. Blue's Clues uni-point win over bREaD ties them at 5-7, with blue moving into 4th place based on their 2-1 head to head record vs red so far. Green Beans continue to work in search of a win having clinched the 6 seed in the playoffs.
Shout out to the captains for contributing write-ups for tonight's games.
