This summer has been so wet. It was lovely to have a Thursday without rain. Teams gathered to celebrate Halloween in July. Gummy Bears were enjoyed. Sour Patch Kids were tossed and caught in mouths. There were even Swedish Fish for Tom. Costumes included an eggplant, Waluigi, Ken's alternate outfit from Street Fighter (deep video game nerdery... Respect), tiger, lobster, sea turtle, bat, a herd of sheep, an adorable puppy dressed as himself (in a baby blue kerchief), at least four other dogs, and we received the blessings of Jesus Christ.
All three games were excellent.
In the early game, Green Beans and bREaD traded scores before green took the lead and carried it to half. Green continued to lead, building the score to 10-6. Red got a hold and then scored four breaks in a row, completing a massive comeback to win 11-10 as time expired. Red's zone flummoxed green's handlers in the game's final 15 minutes, overcoming a heroic performance by Carly, who played all but one point for green. The heartbroken green team continues to fight and stay positive as they seek a win.
White's handler duo of Dave and Lucas continues to be the engine of their success, with solid fundamentals on offense. The purple Beets stayed close against them, with athletic play and league-leading pom-poms and cheers of "P-U P-U-R P-U-R-P-L-E-Y!" on the sideline. White held on to get the win 13-11, taking a 2-1 season series lead against Beets.
In the nightcap, Black Sheep faced Blue's Clues in a game Waldie called "intense!" You know it was good to get him to pay attention when his focus after his own team's games is usually on Spikeball. With Luke delayed in traffic, Keegs and Marisa kept Blue on track with athletic effort from their whole squad, and blue eked out an impressive 12-11 win. It was blue's first victory in three tries against black this summer.
With white's win and black's loss, the two teams are once again tied at the top of the standings, and 1-1 against each other. The tie break is still white's DoW-less forfeit to black on June 5th, which gives black a narrow edge on point differential. Remember, forfeits count as a 7-0 loss. Purple's loss and red's win bring the teams within one game of each other in the standings for 3rd and 4th place, with purple holding that narrow one game lead, as well as a 2-1 head to head advantage vs red. Blue's win puts them only one game behind red as well. Green knows that every team makes the playoffs, and they would love to pull an upset.
