Summer 2023 Playoffs, Monday, August 14, 2023
After a week of rainouts, playoffs finally got underway at the Kiln. All four teams gave a lot of effort, and the games were exciting to watch.
In the early game, Sky Bison built a 6-1 lead and took half up comfortably. Best Fronds were not to be denied. Kate and Mufasa had the plants grow wild in the 2nd half, rattling off FIVE break points and putting a scare into the Bison. The Sky Bison were short on numbers, but long on chemistry. Marisa played the entire game, and inspired her teammates as they yip-yipped their way to victory. Jordan played especially valiantly for Fronds in the loss. With the win, the Sky Bison held seed and advanced to face 2nd seed Ice Ice Babies in the early game on Thursday.
In the late game, Bottomless Mimosas had a great turnout including the seldom seen but always welcome Dillon Cooke, who made big plays on both offense and defense in the game. There were some great DOW players on both sides in this matchup, with Ava, Torch, Sammy and Mattie playing for Mimosas, and Mikayla, Bri and Caro playing for Pepper. Black Pepper was down 3-0 early and it looked like the game could get out of hand, but they made a spicy comeback and tied the score at 4-4. After a few back-and-forth points, Mimosas took half up two, but Pepper received the pull to start the second half and they held after another long point. Mimosas pulled out to a wider lead, only to have Pepper come back again. Wilcha made a crazy layout D for Pepper, and almost got the bookends but he used his better judgement to avoid a dangerous play to do it. This time, there wasn't enough spice for Pepper to get it done, and Mimosas got the narrow win 15-13, breaking seed and advancing to the semis on Thursday, where they will face top seeded Purple Rain in the late game.
