Tonight's games were the last match-ups between teams that hadn't faced each other yet this summer. The early game was Black Pepper versus Orange, who announced their team is named Bottomless Mimosas. Or was it Unlimited Mimosas? Either way, it was a long enough name that I had to change the column width in the standings spreadsheet. Pepper received the pull and scored Dow to DoW with Bri finding Mikayla in the end zone. The teams traded points until the score was 2-2, and then the Mimosas started to kick in, taking half 8-4. The second half, Mimosas continued to pour it on and the game was soft-capped at 7:15, with Mimosas up 12-6, so the next game could begin on time. It was the first win of the season for Mimosas, who have been in a number of close games and tied with Best Fronds last week. It was the second loss in a row for Pepper, who began the season 3-0. Mikayla scored all but one of Pepper's points in the loss.
The prime time matchup featured Ice Ice Babies versus Purple Rain, with Purple Rain staging a white-out to provide more color contrast versus the Babies in blue. Purple Rain came out hot with a quick 4-0 start. Purple’s zone defense flooded the field and disrupted Blue’s offensive rhythm. Purple Rain continued their intensity throughout the game, and proved too much for I.I.B. to handle. Lucas’s defensive efforts to force turns and Jane at the helm pushing their offense forward proved to be a “rain” of terror for the Blue team. Purple Rain over Blue 15-6, handing I.I.B. their first loss of the season and sliding into a tie for first place with both teams at 4-1 and Purple Rain holding the tie break with the head to head victory.
A delightful late game was had between Best Fronds and Sky Bisons. Prior to the game, teams agreed to begin early and play to 13 in an effort to beat the rain. It was a successful plan, and most were able to get to their cars before getting dumped on. Both teams took the opportunity to introduce and work through zone defense. Much learning and dope Frisbee was had! Steven P threw a breathtaking huck to Joey - who had his first Frisbee hat trick! Fronds came out freshly misted with their first score DoW to DoW: Cass shook her defender and read Kate’s mind to position herself just inside the goal line! From there the Fronds took a learning approach to the game; OC even stopped play briefly to give some tips to a rookie Bison on how best to mark in a cup! As the Bisons worked their lead, Jordan recognized a deep play to the grassy end zone and turned on his wings to sprint and D it. He followed that up with a score on the dirt end zone for a beautiful bookend. Great spirit all around for the late game! The Sky Bisons soared to victory 13-7.
