A fast moving thunderstorm brought hard rain for a few minutes on Monday, and it was enough for us to cancel games. Wednesday, the remains of Hurricane Ida dumped inches of rain across the area, but for some reason the field was open on Thursday and we elected to play. We probably shouldn't have. The field was 50% mud and 50% puddle. The sidelines were worse. Nevertheless, players were happy to meet their new teammates and play disc at the Kiln.
With all the water, fittingly the early game pitted new rivals on the high seas with Black Pearl facing off against the Purple Kraken. Black Pearl are looking to repeat their performance as fall 2019 champions, and they looked strong. Kraken were also in high spirits, hoping to sink the Pearl. The game opened 1-1 before the Pearl went on a run to take a 4-1 lead. Rapid changes of direction were not advised, and wet discs also resulted in some turnovers. The Pearl played a lot of zone defense, and took half 8-4. Kraken received the pull to start the second half, with some dangerous tentacles arriving late. With the Kraken released, Purple made a nice comeback but fell just short of their goal. With a hearty "Yar," Black Pearl earned the win 14-12 hard cap.
In the late game, Mystery Inc., clad in green, faced off against White Claw. Both teams looked spry and unfazed by the mud. Some beautiful long hucks were on display. Mystery took a 4-1 lead, and went on to earn the win 15-6.
There are no games on Monday. The Kiln is closed for Labor Day. Wishing everyone a safe and hopefully not-laborious holiday weekend. I'm also hoping the break gives the field a chance to drain and dry out, and tonight's escapades do not leave a lasting impression for the remainder of the season.
