It was a sunny evening at the Kiln as teams faced off in second round playoff match-ups. The first round on Monday was chalk, with 2nd seed White handling 3rd seed Black 15-4, and top seed Red getting past 4th seed Blue 15-10.
That meant Blue and Black faced off in an elimination game on the loser's side of the bracket in the early game tonight. Black won the season series between the two teams three games to two. Blue started hot, scoring the games first three points. Black scored three in a row to tie the game 3-3. Then, Blue went on an even bigger run, taking half 8-3. After Blue's lead grew to 9-3 at the start of the second half, Black made a huge comeback to get within one point. Back and forth play continued. Both teams did not want to go home. The score was tied at 12-12. Bobby and Gary were both playing inspired disc for Black, and their teammates elevated their play too. Blue looked gassed when Candido (who thought the game was at 7:45) and Caro (who thought she would miss the game completely) arrived in time to play critical points for Blue down the stretch. Before the flip, the teams had somewhat jokingly discussed first team to 15 with an 8:15 hard cap if the game wound up being incredibly long. With spectators and many players from White and Red, there was a huge crowd going wild on the sidelines as Black scored to bring the game to 14-14 at 8:11 PM - U-POINT. Blue received the pull, worked the disc to midfield, and turned over the disc! Black had a chance for the win, but turned the disc back over to Blue. With the sidelines going nuts, Blue got the final score to win 15-14 in a very evenly matched game.
The early contest was a tough act to follow, but the late game featured two great teams in Red and White, coming off first round wins and looking to score a bye on Monday. The commish spoke to the captains about the losing team collecting the scoreboard and cones to bring to Monday's game, and both Tom and Zay looked forward to their adversary taking care of that task. Red has been the most athletic team this summer, and they got out to an early lead, taking half 8-4. However, like the early game, the late game proved to be a game of runs. White battled all the way back in the second half, coming from behind and upsetting the top seeded Red team. White got the win 15-13. The loss ended Red's winning streak at 10 games. Their last loss was in a 17-16 thriller back on June 10th.
With the win, White earned a bye on Monday, while Tom and the Red team had to collect the cones and scoreboard to bring to Monday's match-up versus Blue. The Red-Blue game will start at 7PM. Come watch the game!
