Monday, June 10th, games were rained out. Thursday, June 13, the field was reserved for something less fun than Frisbee. Remember the summers back in the day, when we played ultimate at the Kiln two nights a week and life was beautiful? Tonight it was one of those nights again, and it was glorious.
Red and Green squared off in the early game, and it was a good one. Both teams had their moments, and the score was close. For some reason, Green was the red score on the scoreboard, while Red was black. That ultimately proved too confusing for the sidelines, so in the middle of the first half with the score tied, the decision was made to switch. It is always prudent for Red to be red on the scoreboard. Trust me on this. I have many, many red jerseys, and it has been said that the position I play best in ultimate is scorekeeper. The game remained close deep into the second half. Bri had her hair in braids, and while players on Green were thinking that she was adorable, she would make them pay with a deep cut or a furious D. Ryan did not have his hair in braids, but in spite of that he somehow managed to summon a few more plays out of the Green team, and they won the game 13-11, hard cap. With the win, Green remains unbeaten, while Red was oh so close to getting their first victory of the summer. Red is too good to be winless - it's just a matter of a few back and forth points going their way.
In prime time, Black was without the services of Jimi, Stew and even Captain Tom, who had the temerity to miss ultimate to attend a Yankee game. Priority fail. Yellow extended Black every courtesy. They allowed Black to pick up Hans and Chris America. Black returned the favor by letting KB guest with Yellow. Yellow returned the favor by pummeling Black to an 8-4 half. Ever the second half team, Black battled back and had the score within two before ultimately falling to Yellow 15-9. Fortunately, Black covered the spread, so Zac and his crew had to make a stealthy getaway before the bookies made them pay up. With the win, Yellow remains tied atop the standings with Green, both teams 4-0. Black has a talented team, but sits at 1-3.
In the nightcap, two games went on simultaneously. On the field, White welcomed Eli back from Carlton and David and Marisa sat in with them to form a strong squad. Blue welcomed Connor back to the Kiln, returning to the team he played for a few summers ago. They began the game with a rousing rendition of their famous Blu Tang Clan cheer. Both these teams had some big throws and deep cuts. Blue had the edge with chilly play, taking advantage of turnovers and converting break point scores. Isaiah made a furious layout catch to snag a huck for a score only inches off the ground to give Blue the lead at half. White kept it close, but Blue never relinquished their lead, pulling away to defeat White 15-11. Special shout out to Hans who pulled a Van Tassell tonight, playing in all three games - for Red, Black, and White. He may have finished 0-3, but he was #1 in the league's heart and he played great ultimate in all three contests.
The second late game occurred on the sidelines. It was a kill confirmed deathmatch between Team Spectator and Team Mosquito. Team Mosquito got their UAV online, and proceeded to spawn trap the spectators. It was brutal. I survived the match, but I'm pretty sure I'm a quart low.
Overall, it was a lot of fun, and I'd like to do it again on Thursday. We may need to wait, though. There's an 80% chance of thunderstorms. :\
