After five of our first eight scheduled game nights were rained out this summer, the league made it five game nights in a row tonight. The games were the first match-ups between Green and White early, Yellow and Blue in prime time, and Black and Red in the late game. The previous two nights these teams were scheduled to play were rained out, but the matchups all looked compelling based on the standings, and the games did not disappoint.
Green and White battled to a 12-12 tie score in a hard cap situation. It was Green getting the win on universe point, to retain at least a share of first place. White was right there, though, and the game could have gone the other way.
In prime time, with a number of players still out of town, Yellow looked beatable and Blue came in hot as the winners of four straight games. Blue had a 13-10 lead in what really should have been a hard cap, but Red and Black were content to let the teams play the game out - perhaps thinking that Blue would hold and put the game away quickly. That didn't happen. The game ended up taking another twenty minutes, as Yellow got a remarkable string of breaks and came from behind to win 15-14 on universe point.
The late game featured one of the most beautiful layouts to break up a pass that has been witnessed at the Kiln in many years. Shmack threw a pass to what appeared to be a wide open Red teammate, only to see Tom Santiago go full on Superman in a bid that was called "Nationals highlight worthy" by one amazed onlooker. Tom was horizontal for a solid two meters in the air, knocking the pass away and sliding across the clover for a distance that I could only match if I jumped out of a moving car. Black won the game 15-7, earning their second victory of the season, while Red is still looking for an elusive W in spite of a talented squad.
