There were three turns before the first point was scored. It was the Scoobys who got the score. They scored the first two points of the game, only to have Black Pearl score the three after that. Scooby got two more, and then Black Pearl tied the score at 4-4, then scored again to lead by one. Timeout was called with Black up 5-4. At this rate, a double header was kind of scary. It was already cold, and some players were pointing out that they had to work in the morning.
In spite of the weather and the long points, spirits were high on both sides. Bri made a couple of layout defensive plays for Blue. Zac jumped so high for a score it took several seconds for him to return to the ground with the disc. The sidelines were awestruck, and also cold.
Black Pearl played a lot of zone defense due to the windy conditions, which were described by the sidelines as "zero mile per hour winds." I'm no meteorologist, but by my estimation it was not windy at all. Yet, the zone worked pretty well - clogging the lanes and providing enough coverage deep to keep the Scoobys from getting easy hucks over the top. When Pearl's defense forced quick turns and they got a short field, they made quick work on points.
Black Pearl took half, and held the Scoobys to a long scoring drought in the second half. When Black was up about 12-5, Blue made a nice comeback, rattling off a number of points in a row to cut the margin to four. After a couple of back and forth points, Black Pearl was not to be denied. They scored the last two points of the game and won 15-10. No rematch necessary. There was some talk of pickup afterwards, but once the team pictures were taken and players started to cool off and feel the chill in the air, we called it a night.
Congratulations to the Black Pearl, East Fishkill Ultimate's Fall 2019 Champs! Well played, Scooby Blue, a quality effort to finish second. And now... who is going to confirm a place for us to play indoors this winter?
