Thursday, November 8, 2018: The Kiln was officially a swamp. Even after two nice days, there were still puddles and marshy areas all across the field and sidelines. Red and White met for the Fall 2018 Championship. If White won, the teams would have a rematch on Monday since Red was unblemished so far in our double elimination format. If Red won, the season would be over.
Red pulled to start the game, and the score went back and forth before Red opened an early lead. Red had far more break opportunities, though, and could have built a bigger lead but did not. Red was stuck on five goals for ages, while White battled back to claim the lead 6-5. Red knotted the score at 6-6, then 7-7, and Red took half 8-7.
Red received the second half pull and scored to lead 9-7 on a filthy great throw to Brian Funicelli. Just keep on scoring, Red said, and they would put the game away. But they did not. White went on a huge run, scoring the game's next five points. The game looked almost out of reach, but Red had battled back from big deficits before. With White at game point, Red went on a run of their own, bringing the score to 14-14. U-Point!
Red pulled to White who worked the disc patiently down the far sideline. Chilly handling led to a score, and White got the win 15-14. With the victory, White forces a rematch on Monday, November 12, to decide the Championship!
Red forced more turns, but missed some opportunities to break. White converted a higher percentage of breaks. It was a great game. My write-up doesn't do justice to the plays that were made by both teams. Also, there was a side game happening on the sidelines, and a fun group of folks at the field in spite of the cold and the mud.
