Two excellent games tonight, and one not so excellent that still included some great individual efforts.
Red and Green kept it close in the first game. As usual for Red, of course that meant it went to overtime, tied 11-11. Both teams scored in extra time, and for the second consecutive game Red was able to get a win on Universe point, 13-12. Of the eight games played so far this season, Red has gone to overtime in six of them, with two ending in ties before we changed our rules, and three being decided on Universe point. Red has only lost one of those games (to White). Red's only two games that did not go to OT were both wins, by one point over Blue, and a big win over a depleted Black team. Clearly Red likes to keep it close. Corey has wondered when ESPN will send a 30 for 30 documentary film crew to start making an episode, which will be simply titled "Universe."
Yellow was missing a number of key players in prime time, including much beloved Captain Jimi. Black responded with little sypmathy, winning 17-6 in a solid performance. Yellow's ladies played valiantly, with Kenzie making two excellent up-line cuts and throwing a score, Kate making solid cuts and playing good defense, and Bri scoring four of Yellow's six points in the game. Gold stars for Yellow's "Powerpuff Girls," or should those stars be Mello Yello?
Blue and White put on a show for the folks who stayed to watch the nightcap. Tyler Wilcha made a great toe-tapping catch on the sideline for Blue, and then converted on a honey point to Samantha. Wind picked up and made some of the throws hang or flutter, particularly New Paltz Hammers. White held an 8-5 lead at the half, but Blue had momentum. Blue tied the score late in the second half, though White was able to seize the win, scoring to go ahead again with only six seconds left to play.
With eight games played, Red, White and Black have established a clear lead in the standings over Blue, Yellow and Green. However, most of the games have been close - especially Red's games.
