The summer 2017 draft is in the books, including a few late additions and one trade between Green and Red. Rosters are posted here. The season starts on Monday, May 15. The schedule is posted here.
Some draft fun and analysis:
I'm thrilled to see so much diversity in our league. I think there is good balance between the teams too, but we'll have to see once the games start. As with pretty much any rec league, a lot depends on who shows up.
Green:
Dan drafted a deep and diverse roster, with the second highest average skill point total from signups. They should also be in pretty good shape for attendance with eight expected full-time players. However, two of their strong players begin the summer season with injuries, and the extremely talented duo of Kerry Beyrer and John Geraghty are part-timers.
Red:
Corey has a solid team that includes several of the players that helped him win the league championship last fall with Black. The team only has three ladies on the roster, fewest of any team, but they include last summer’s Ladies' Callahan winner, Sarah Ashcroft.
White:
Cody has proven to be a shrewd captain in the draft, and he came out of this one with the highest team average skill point total from signups. However, like previous drafts, he may have opted for quality over attendance, with only four players expecting to be at every game. Could they have a chemistry problem with a lot of part-time folks?
Black:
Zac was outstanding last year, playing key roles on the White summer and Black fall teams, both winning championships. He stepped up to captain this summer, and put together a strong squad. Similar to White, chemistry might be slow to develop with only five expected full-time players, but I believe Zac will have a great team, especially with former club teammate Bobby Owens playing on Monday nights.
Blue:
Chris drafted a team with no elders, but tied for the most ladies with five. They are buoyed by a very talented core of Gary Chasteen, Brian Funicelli, Luisa Neves and Tyler Wilcha. However, Gary and Luisa both have other disc commitments that will keep them from some games. Will others rise to the opportunity and make the most of their minutes?
Yellow:
Jimi quietly stockpiled a team that includes many of his Cortland friends and teammates. They have the lowest team average skill points from signups, but will that prove to be true on the field? At minimum, this team is expected to be athletic and fun-loving, clearly the early favorites to win the league’s spirit award.
