Summer 2016 Championship and Awards, Thursday, August 11

Post date: Aug 12, 2016 5:32:13 PM

Storm clouds were in the area, but the field was open and we hoped the thunderstorms would miss us so we started the championship game at 7 PM. White jumped out to an early lead over Yellow, and the White Walkers controlled tempo for much of the first half. Yellow proved capable of staying in the game, though, methodically working the disc down the field for scores of their own. A few very long points showed both teams could make mistakes on offense and make good plays on defense too. By halftime, White led 9-4, but the game could go either way. Clouds were growing nearer to the field, and the distant thunder was cause for concern.

Yellow scored in the second half to cut White's lead to 9-5. After some additional back and forth, White got the disc on a turn just as lightning zapped across the sky alarming folks on the sidelines. Play was stopped with 23:19 remaining in the second half. Per our rules, games that complete the first half prior to a weather stoppage can count as an official final, but neither team wanted it to end that way. We cleared the field and sidelines and met up under cover of the Rec Center roof to wait out a weather delay. After more than half an hour, lightning strikes continued in close proximity to the field, and a number of players were not comfortable resuming play. Unfortunately, too many players also said they were not available next week to conclude the game, so we called the 9-4 score a final in favor of White, the Summer 2016 champions.

The All Star game is postponed to Monday, August 15 at 7 PM. All players, family and friends are encouraged to come out to watch the action, and perhaps even get a chance to participate in some free-for-all points, especially since some of our All Stars are unfortunately unable to attend.

We also announced the Summer 2016 league awards:

Team of the Summer: Blue

Captain of the Summer: Chris America

Best spirit: Jimmy O'Connell and Nick Van Tassell (tie)

Best defensive player: Walter Roosa

Best cutter: Zach Schiff

Best handler: Gary Chasteen

Ladies' Callahan (best overall female player in the league): Sarah Ashcroft

Men's Callahan (best overall male player in the league): Emory Crane (His 3rd consecutive East Fishkill Cally! Quite an accomplishment given the number of other excellent players currently in the league.)

Please join us in congratulating these folks on their league awards!
