Black and Red played four times during the Fall regular season:
The two teams met three times in the playoffs:
Those two games set the stage for tonight's championship. Red pulled to Black, and the game was on. Both teams scoring without a break for the first few points, and then each team holding a one or two point lead. The score was close with many tie scores throughout. Red led by a point at half, and then received the opening pull to start the second. Again, the score went back and forth with Black getting some breaks to tie and then take the lead by one.
Red came back and ultimately scored what looked like the game winner with under a minute to play. Black called timeout and managed a big huck to Sam Viau to tie the score 15-15 as time expired. Four overtime games in a row, including all three playoff games for these two teams! Black won the toss and received to start a 5-minute overtime with each team getting one timeout. It ended up being a long point, but ultimately Red got the break and took the lead 16-15. Red pulled again and Black moved the disc, but turned it over. Red gave it right back, and then got another defensive stop. With time expiring, Red was able to retain possession of the disc and run out the clock - 16-15 in overtime.
I have played ultimate for a long time, and I cannot remember two teams so evenly matched playing so many close games in a season. Excellent play, Black, and congratulations Red.
