His maternal aunts and uncles in photos

These family photos begin with Thomas and Anne Williams of Waunfwlchan farm, Llangain. They were Dylan's maternal great-grandparents. It is from them that we can trace the various relations who settled in Llandyfaelog, Ferryside, Pontardulais and, of course, Swansea, including their daughter Hannah/Anna, who married George Williams, agricultural labourer, Chief Shipping Inspector on the railways, deacon of Canaan chapel, St Thomas, superintendent of the Sunday school and landlord.

Anne Williams, wife of Evan of Llwyngwyn, and their daughter, Hannah.

Evan was the son of Thomas and Anne Williams of Waunfwlchan.

Seated on the right is Anne and Evan's oldest child, Sarah Maesgwyn, with her husband, Thomas Evans, behind her. With them are Sarah's cousin, William Thomas, son of Hannah and Joseph Thomas of Pen-y-coed and Pantyrhuad, near Laugharne, and his wife Annie. At the time of this photo in the late 1920s/early 1930s, William and Annie were farming Llwynbrain, just outside Bancyfelin, which was later left to Heulwen Morris of Llwyngwyn. For more on Thomas and Sarah Evans, see Maesgwyn: the servant.... on this site.

Florence also had two sisters-in-law:

  • Her brother, Thomas, was married to Emma Davies. They had no children.

  • Another brother, John, married Elizabeth Ann Evans, and had a daughter, Theodosia born in 1904. After John's death, Elizabeth and Theodosia moved to New Quay c1929, where Dylan occasionally visited them in the 1930s. Dylan continued to visit the town in the 1940s and lived there from 1944-45. There is more on Elizabeth and New Quay in D. N. Thomas (2002) The Dylan Thomas Trail, Y Lolfa pp106-109, with photos on pp112-115.
