BECOME A MEMBER
Welcome! We are pleased that you are seeking membership in duPont Manual's National Honor Society. NHS is the most prestigious organization at most any high school in the nation, and that is no exception at Manual.
We are looking for well-rounded, self-motivated students that are committed to academics and service. Closely evaluate your time commitments with respect to academics, extracurriculars, employment, and family obligations before seeking membership. NHS obligations combined with junior and senior level rigor can be demanding and take a toll on members.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Scholarship: Applicants must be a sophomore or junior with a cumulative GPA above 3.7000. Any semester grades below a C must be explained. The counseling office will verify all grades.
Leadership: Applicants need to show involvement in the classroom, school, and community during high school years. You will be asked to list the names of organizations you have volunteered for along with any special recognition, awards, or honors you have received. If you hold or have held an office position, or were a candidate for office, be sure to include all the specifics on the application.
Service: The selection committee will be looking for a track record of active school and community service during your time at duPont Manual. You will be asked to list all of the service projects you have been involved in since the beginning of freshman year. The name of the project, specifics of involvement, and contact information must be provided so that service can be verified.
Character: Applicants must showcase their good character through a series of short answer questions. Additionally, any referrals or other disciplinary actions from high school must be stated.
APPLICATION
Teacher Recommendations: Applicants are required to submit THREE duPont Manual Teacher Recommendations.
Teachers must have had you as a student or as part of an extracurricular activity.
Make sure to give teachers plenty of time to submit their recommendations before the deadline.
The selection committee looks for three "VERY GOOD" recommendations from these teachers
While it does not prohibit acceptance, expectations for members are quite high and any single mark in the highlighted areas of the recommendation form could cause for denial.
Work Experience, Recognition, & Awards: Applicants are asked to list any job experience, honors, or recognition they have received.
Include any summer jobs held
Include the name of the employers, position held, and any relevant specifics you feel are pertinent to the selection committee.
Working during high school is not a requirement; however, this may strengthen your application by documenting leadership
Extracurricular Activities: NHS looks for members that are well-rounded; therefore, the selection committee will be looking for members that are involved with at least 2 extracurricular activities, one of which is at Manual.
Four Pillars: Applicants must display how they adhere to the pillars of NHS
Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Character

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES
Applications CANNOT just be dropped off as the candidate MUST sign a multiple receipt form.
The $25 induction check will not be deposited unless the applicant is accepted. If not accepted, the check will be returned.
There is NO online payment.
The National NHS office will never mail material home, nor solicit funds from you via the internet, so do not be fooled by any mailings you may receive from groups sounding like NHS.
By completing and submitting the application, you are agreeing to allow NHS officers, sponsors, and faculty council members to review all information provided and information that may be needed in the future to verify compliance with NHS membership requirements such as GPA, discipline letter referrals, etc.
Applicants will be informed of their application status near the end of April or early May. Applicants will either be notified that they are an official candidate or deemed not sufficient.
After becoming an official candidate, you will be informed of an additional meeting where the next step of your application process is explained: the summer service project. With a successful summer project completion, maintenance of a 3.700+ GPA, and a clean discipline record, you will be inducted into NHS as an official member.
Attendance to induction practice and ceremony is mandatory.
All decisions regarding applications are final.
