In the early 70's I was introduced to a charming, charismatic, and powerful woman named Beth St Claire (Hapgood). She had a series of reel-to-reel recordings of channeled spirit lectures by a local psychic medium Elwood Babbit, and was worried that they might become lost as the format was already dead, and the newer technology of tape cassettes had taken hold. She convinced me that I had been sent to her to undertake the transfer of this material to cassette tape so that it could be preserved. I did this and these cassettes landed on a shelf and collected dust for 40 years. I came across them during a period of unemployment in 2010 at it occurred to me that the same situation now existed. No cassette tape players in the house, and no one sells or listens to this low fidelity format anymore. So I undertook to see if they were still any good and to preserve them digitally.
At the time I had lots friends who were also "seekers" and many were in or on the periphery of a local commune, "the Brotherhood of the Spirit" , led by Michael Metelica, who grew up in Lyden MA. One of these friends was ? Baldwin, a younger brother of Jim Baldwin, with whom I had gone to school. Baldwin and his wife had fallen under the spell of the commune, and also a group in Stoneham MA who called themselves the "I am's". Baldwin introduced me to the group. These folks were quite spiritual but had some strange beliefs also, such as celebacy and clean living, neither of which interested me at the time, however I was impressed with their spiritual dimention and read a lot of the texts underlying their sect. These books were given via a channel by St. Germain , an ascended master. I visited several times the headquarters, but eventually drifted away from the group, Baldwin and seeking, due to career moves and other factors. From this experience, I became interested in psychic matters and information delivered via channeling the dead, particularly "advanced" souls who had some messages to deliver to our "New Age" . My reccolection is that Baldwin or another commune friend, perhaps Ben ???, at the time introduced me to Beth and I visted her several time in her home in Warwick MA. She was a close friend of the psychic individual who was the channel for these tapes and who was recently deceased himself, so she felt a special responsibility to preserve his work.
excerpt from The History of the Brotherhood of the Spirit/Renaissance Community: 1968-1988 (by Dan Brown)
"The concept of spirituality was still new and uncharted in the late 1960’s but the group, now known as the Brotherhood of the Spirit, had as its spiritual advisor, a local farmer named Elwood Babbitt, a trance-medium in the Edgar Cayce tradition. Both Babbitt and Metelica believed that the Earth was about to undergo cataclysmic changes in preparation of the Aquarian Age. Babbitt, in particular, was getting information through his spirit guides who warned that humanity’s selfish and self-destructive behavior would cause nature to literally rebel in such a way as to cause widespread death and destruction (while laughable when presented back in 1968, the current and irrevocable crisis of global warming makes this theory a less humorous matter). These “Earth Changes” as they were called would be a precursor to the spiritual enlightenment of the Aquarian Age, the next step in the evolution of the human race. According to Babbitt, groups like the Brotherhood would be the harbingers of this new age, functioning as teachers of this higher wisdom to the shattered survivors of these worldwide cataclysms."
