GRANT Program

OVERVIEW

POSITIVE is pleased to offer the opportunity to the faculty and administration in the Dover-Sherborn Middle School to apply for an award through the grant program. The POSITIVE board seeks proposals that will enhance and enrich the classroom and the school environment at the Middle School by providing additional support in the classroom and through enrichment programs out of the classroom. The hope is to provide additional learning opportunities for our students, faculty and staff beyond what our school’s tax budget provides.

The Board encourages proposals for:

GRANTS AWARDED

GSA In-House Field Trip

POSITIVE supported our LGBTQ+ students. The  GSA In-House Field Trip was created to provide a space for our LGBTQ+ students and Allies where their identities are celebrated and affirmed. The students participated in a cross grade scavenger hunt around campus, followed by a therapeutic art session and a musical jam session. Workshops on how to respond to trans/homophobic microaggressions were led by the Assistant Director of the Harvard College BGLTQ Office. At the end of the program, a mini Lavender Graduation was held where the 8th graders received their pins.

DS Garden - Le Jardin de  DS

POSITIVE continuously provided maintenance funds for the DS Garden. The DS Garden was designed and built by a high school student as a Girl Scout project. Over the past five years, middle school students have taken primary responsibility for the garden during the school year, Middle school science teachers, Mary Memmot, Jessica Mainuli and Olive Woodward steward the wellbeing of the garden. Students have started seeds, helped plant the garden, fertilized, and winterized it in the fall, and harvested food to bring to the cafeteria for lunches and to donate to food pantries. The intention is to continue this work so that as many students can have access to the garden as an exploratory, hands-on learning environment.

Portrait of a Graduate Stickers

POSITIVE supports the reinforcement of positive behavior and growth in students. Utilizing the Portrait of a Graduate stickers along with our monthly assemblies, teachers focus on one competency and have a mini lesson. We started with empathy, communication, and perseverance. By explicitly teaching about the skills and recognizing students for exemplifying the competencies, we hope to reinforce positive behavior, achievement, and citizenship in middle school. While middle school has always been a key time for reinforcing these competencies, we find the demand is even greater amid the Covid-19 Pandemic.

CAG - Rain Gardens and Barrels for the Future

POSITIVE praised the cross-grades project which connects science to reality. This rain barrel installation connects to the curriculum students at Pine Hill talk about when learning about the water cycle. It also connects to the overarching question that is the base of the 8th-grade science curriculum; “how can we use energy and matter more sustainably?”. This installation is one example of using water more sustainably; and will help students understand and apply what they learn in the classroom in real life, giving them hands-on experience. Lastly, the main focus of 8th grade is to bestow students with qualities of citizenship. This project is mainly student-led and organized, showing them that they can make an impact on their community that will positively contribute and makes them valuable assets.

DS Garden - Le Jardin de  DS

POSITIVE provided maintenance funds for the DS Garden. The DSMS garden is a 5-year initiative supported by teachers and students that promotes outdoor activity, produce for the lunchroom and food for pantry donations, as well as a terrific resource for science classes.

Deana’s Educational Theater, Guidance

POSITIVE  funded two shows by the very popular Deana’s Educational Theatre arranged by the guidance department. These plays were highly popular in previous years. This year both the plays were virtual. One of the plays- BUS STOP, teaches students how to deal with bullying/ cyberbullying, particularly focusing on the cyberbullying piece. This play also shows how a cyberbullying incident that occurs outside of school can affect students’ well-being in school. It touches on issues dealing with social media and digital citizenship and allows for conversation interwoven into the program, rather than just at the conclusion of the skits.

Zoomsical Drive in Movie

POSITIVE helped support the Drama department’s MS musical, Zoomsical, this year by helping to offset the cost of renting the equipment for the AWESOME drive-in theatre experience.

Interactive Tech, Math Department

The Middle School Math Department Received 9 Interactive HP Elite Laptops to Fortify Excellence in Remote Learning from POSITIVE Grant. To best support remote learning in Mathematics,  these interactive laptops enable teachers to write/draw on the screen and enable real-time explanations of complex topics. Karen Raymond  shared that these interactive laptops are connected to a smartboard which allows them to be sharable in Zoom. This helps facilitate more detailed explanations and richer discussions with students.

Cyber Civics, Social Studies

Department

POSITIVE Awarded Cyber Civics Grant to Bolster Curriculum to include Digital Citizenship. Cyber Civics is a subscription-based classroom curriculum that meets a growing need to prepare students to be ethical, safe, and productive digital citizens. This ground-breaking program has solved the riddle of teaching kids how to become ethical and knowledgeable media consumers and producers.  Cyber Civics promotes social and behavioral skills throughout the curriculum.  Students are not only learning digital skills but real-life skills as well.

Books for Jennifer De Leone Book Discussion

POSITIVE purchased 13 copies of Jennifer DeLeon’s book, Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From , for DSMS students. The book addresses a student’s experience in the METCO program, including the racism she and fellow METCO students face in their predominately white suburban high school. Ms. DeLeon led a community read of the book and facilitated small affinity groups at the DSMS related to the book’s content.

Books for Music Lab

POSITIVE funded over 15 books.  The Music Lab wanted to start a small library of books that celebrated all people of color for its Music Lab 203.

Sample Rolling Book Carts

Two Rolling Book Carts were purchased by POSITIVE. These carts will facilitate instruction since teachers often teach in different classrooms and need books to be cycled through several classes. Most students & teachers in the building will benefit from these movable carts to share and use resources

Culturally Proficient Posters

In an effort to help increase the inclusiveness at our middle school, POSITIVE funded the purchase of antiracism, inclusive and community-building prints and posters. These artistic prints have been placed around the building. We hope and believe that these posters will increase affirming messages to all students and staff that DSMS is a safe and welcoming environment.

Black Lives Matter in School Book

70 Black Lives Matter at School books were purchased for all staff members. These books along with beautiful cookies were distributed by "Secret Santa" Mr. Kellett before the Holiday break! As we continue the journey of cultural responsiveness at DS, this highly recommended book will be used to create reading and discussion groups.

Inspirational  Bathroom Decals

funded 20 Decals for bathroom doors. Vinyl decals with inspirational sayings were purchased  for the two bathrooms on the main floor of the middle school. The decals are placed on the stall doors.  These contain ten different encouraging sayings around kindness, inspiration and doing the right thing.

Raiders Rock - Strong Together T-Shirts / Peer Leadership Club

The Peer Leadership Club at DSMS has been active in running an end-of-the-year school-wide fitness event called, Raiders Rock: Run, Roll or Walk on the Friday prior to April vacation. This year the student leaders designed a T-Shirt for every DSMS student, remote and in-person learners. The students took part in a 1-mile fitness challenge through our PE classes. Students who are fully remote took part in the event virtually.

Special thanks to Detective Godinho and Officer Kolo.
