Vinh Thong Ta received an MSc degree in 2008 in computer science/IT security from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE).
He earned his PhD degree in 2014 in IT security from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE), in the Laboratory of Cryptography and System Security (CrySyS Lab), where his advisor was Professor Levente Buttyán.
From February 2014 to January 2015, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA), in the group PRIVATICS with Dr Daniel Le Métayer. At INRIA, he investigated possible solutions for privacy by design and accountability problems.
Between 2015 and 2021, he worked at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), where he held the positions of Lecturer (2015-20) and Senior Lecturer (2020-21), as well as co-founded and co-led the Laboratory of Security and Forensic Research (SAFeR). He was the leader for the cybersecurity BSc (Hons) and apprenticeship degrees at UCLan's main campus.
He worked in the Department of Computer Science at Edge Hill University between June 2021 - May 2025 as a senior lecturer in cybersecurity and leader of the MSc Cyber Security programme (2023-25), leader of the BSc Computing (Network, Security, and Forensic) programme (2021-23), and leader of the Cyber Security Research Group (2021-25). He led the course team to obtain the National Cyber Security Centre degree certification for the MSc Cyber Security programme (August 2024). He led the cybersecurity student club and student teams to compete at Capture the Flag competitions.
His teaching and research interests include computer security and data privacy areas, including cyber resilience, incident response, zero trust, online safety, and automated verification and assessment of computer systems and networks.
He is a member of the British Computer Society (BCS) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
