Teaching
I have fifteen years of combined teaching experience - ten years teaching as an Assistant/Associate Professor at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville and five years as a graduate student at the University of Texas at Arlington. At Tennessee Tech University, over the past ten years, I have taught a variety of classes, namely, calculus, matrix algebra, introduction to proofs, college geometry, linear algebra I & II, abstract algebra I & II (both undergraduate and graduate), based on the needs of my department. As a graduate student, I taught college algebra and precalculus and was also involved with the NSF GK-12 program. Over the years, my teaching philosophy has evolved alongside the stages of my career as a graduate student to a tenure-track/tenured faculty member. My philosophy centers around some core principles:
My will to encourage students to accept the struggle inherent in learning while acknowledging the need for restructuring of courses when necessary.
Students are genuinely enthusiastic about math when they believe that their instructors view them, holistically, as a person.
Oral skills, in terms of clear articulation of mathematical ideas, must be emphasized at every level.
The beauty of mathematics, for example, the interconnectedness of seemingly unrelated concepts, should not be accessible solely to research mathematicians.
The cost of textbooks can prove to be prohibitive to learning.
