This has included the identification of newly-discovered mass flow deposits offshore Montserrat from marine sediment cores, improving the understanding of the dynamics, frequency and triggers of hazardous volcanic island landslides.
I am also focussing on developing quantitative methods to detect tephra in marine sediment cores and to help distinguish primary eruption tephras from reworked volcanic material with image analysis. These methods will advance the manner in which volcanic records are constructed from marine sediment cores applicable across all settings.
During my PhD, I was involved in a five-week research cruise on board RRS Discovery to assess the biological response to volcanic ash input into the North Atlantic Ocean from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. This cruise led to interesting results about the role of ocean iron fertilisation in the removal of carbon from the atmosphere.
A current project in Southampton aims to understand the how volcanic landslides affect the frequency, style and composition of subsequent volcanic activity.
