Organohalide solvents are among the most common pollutants in the environment. We are interested in using organohalide respiring bacteria to transform such toxic compounds to non-toxic forms. Some of these solvents include chloroethenes, chloroethanes, chloroform, chlorophenols, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). In addition, we are trying to elucidate underlying dehalogenation mechanisms with these microbes using conventional molecular techniques as well as genome/transcriptome sequencing.
