Principal Investigator
Associate Professor Jianzhong He received her Ph.D degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2003. Before moving to U.S.A, she obtained her M.S. and B.S. degrees from Tsinghua University and Harbon Institute of Technology in 1998 and 1995 respectively. She was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California Berkeley for two years before joining the National University of Singapore as an assistant professor in 2005.
Dr He's research focuses on discovering novel microorganisms to transform and detoxify environmental contaminants, enhancing biodegradation by optimizing the growth of functional microbes, and applying nucleic acid-based approach in laboratory cultures and in situ bioremediation. She has been actively involved in research focusing on emerging environmental contaminants polybrominated diphenyls ethers (PBDEs) and the widespread chorinated solvents.

Dr Adrian Low arrived at Dr He's group in Dec 2012. He completed his Ph.D in Microbiology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia from 2009 to 2012. During his Ph.D. he investigated a mixed bacteria culture that degrades the environmental pollutant 1,2-Dichloroethane in the Botany Sands Aquifer, Sydney, Australia. He obtained a BSc in Environmental Science majoring in Environmental Microbiology at UNSW.
He has a broad interest in the role of bacteria in biogeochemical cycles and more specific interest in the use of bacteria to degrade environmental pollutants for the remediation of contaminated sites. Presently, he is leading a project to develop diagnostic tools to type microbial community and antibiotic resistance genes in the water catchments around Singapore.

Mr Matthew Rogers is a current M.Eng candidate in the Department of Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore.
Mr XIN Fengxue (Felix) is currently a research engineer and Ph.D candidate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore. Before joining Dr. He’s group, he has worked for two years in the Biofuel’s laboratory of School of Life Science and Chemical Technology at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore. His current research focuses on discovering and developing novel microorganisms and process optimization for synthesis of biobutanol, 2,3-butanediol, and other value added products production from organic wastes.
