Hitching the skateboard to the chair
Insert the clevis pin from the bottom through the rectangular hitch tube and through the skateboard hitch. Feed the cotter pin through the end of the clevis pin to secure it.
Why does the SkateHitch have straight fixed wheels like a Trailer and not swivel caster wheels?
A swivel caster board with a rigid joint to the chair has poor lateral stability (side to side control) and would cause the chair to spin out control. The passenger mass would shift the center of gravity back too far behind the drive wheels and the chair would become unstable.Â
A trailer with straight fixed wheels has superior lateral stability and therefore that's why the SkateHitch uses that design concept. Straight wheels counter the centrifugal force from the passenger during turns, while swivel casters can't. The downside is that it's difficult to back up a trailer, and you can't turn in place. If you do need to turn around, just turn wide. And to turn in place, the passenger can simply step off the board, the wheelchair will drag the board around, then step back on. But the skatehitch wasn't meant to turn in place, it was meant to go fast and far!
