Title:-“STUDIES IN DESIGN, SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF FERROCENE CONTAINING LIQUID CRYSTALLINE MATERIALS”
Synthesis of ferrocenomesogens exhibiting low temperature mesomorphism.
Liquid crystalline compounds bearing transition metals are attracting greater attention since last two decades because of their capability to access the unique properties such as optical, colour, magnetic, electrical and polarizability.[1] Ferrocenomesogens with planar chirality [2] and side chain liquid crystalline polymers [3] can be used in information storage and ferroelectric devices. The uniqueness of ferrocene is that it can readily and reversibly change to the oxidised state with one unpaired electron, which makes them easily switchable liquid crystalline ferrocenomesogens.[4] A dendrimeric material based on ferrocene also imparts unique properties such as chiroptical and redox activity to the liquid crystalline materials and these types of materials are the promising candidates for the synthesis of switchable anisotropic materials.[5] Hydrogen bonded ferrocenomesogens [6] may lead to the unique opportunities in the field of ferrocene based sensors.
We have reported the novel monosubstituted ferrocenomesogens containing naphthalene unit exhibiting low temperature mesomorphism.
In another project we also have synthesized novel ferrocenomesogens containing cholesterol unit, which shows remarkable liquid crystalline property compared with reported one.
We also have worked on the additional project to understand the effect of different substitution pattern on liquid crystalline property.
We also synthesized some ferrocene based liquid crystalline compounds containing terminal cyano unit.
