Mark Hood's Restoration of 'Dodger', a Douglas 32 (Part 1)

<-Previous Next->

"After a year of sitting on the hard. Deb and I have finally decided to restore our 1972 Douglas 32. We named her "Dodger" Homeport, "Marblehead, MA." We will add more to this Album as things progress. My brother Chris that runs CW Hood Yachts in Marblehead is doing all the work, including engine replacement, wiring, head, ports and numerous other things. She has a built in fiberglass deisel tank. We have the interior and canvas work covered..." Mark & Deb

June 2014. trucked to my brothers shop to begin restoration of our boat "Dodger". First up, strip the boat completely of everything, then access and rebuild with new engine and systems.

"First restored item is the Gemini Compass. Viking instruments did a fantastic job!" "Deb and I were amazed at how well the cockpit cleaned up and our split coaming board has been fixed, it was almost black.... Thanks Bob, great work! Also the aft transom has been gelcoated, it was a real mess. New Engine will arrive later this month, looking forward to that milestone."

"Ultra Suede South Beach sort of a teal color. Yes in the V Berth also. The dodger we made out of Slate Sunbrella with black binding. Cockpit cushions the same with black welt cord and EzDri foam with mesh bottoms for drainage."

Engine Replacement

"Work is progressing on our boat 'Dodger', The old Westerbeke is out, and the new Yanmar 3YM30 is on order. What a wonderful job the CW Hood Yachts crew is doing on our old waterlogged wood work. We are so looking forward to having her done!"

"Binger and Will removed the engine, seacocks, etc."

Engine bay cleaned up...

Thru hulls sealed, old engine mounts removed...

"Now the fun, cockpit support bulkheads and engine beds were rotted so out they came. Binger fit and installed solid glass engine beds from the new Yanmar 3GM diesel. If ever a fiberglass artist exists its "Binger". Beautiful work! All old thru-hulls glassed over and faired making way for new Marelon seacocks."

New engine mount glassed into place...

"Work continues on our Douglas sloop. Deb and I are just so impressed with the work being done by the Craftsmen at CW Hood Yachts. Lockers and engine bay have been painted and the woodwork looks new.... Looks like our new Yanmar will be going in soon. Very excited for spring launch!"

"The new Yanmar 3YM30 finally arrived with the 1.56 to 1 transmission that was the big holdup."

New engine lowered into cabin...

"Work on our Douglas is progressing. Desmond Binger is doing a wonderful job of installing our engine. The old mounts are gone and the new one glassed in place. Paint is next, then the engine goes in. Single Seacock in the engine room. Deck and cockpit drains will now be above the water line."

New engine in place! Notice the sound insulation on left and right.
