The DOS/360 Distribution

Distribution materials for this procedure come from different times and places. DOS/360 was originally distributed on the customer's choice of 7- or 9-track tape or 2311 or 2314 disk packs, and each distribution was specific to the disk device type, 2311 or 2314, that would be used for the target system.

The available distribution is for DOS release 26.2 on a pair of (originally) 7-track tapes for a 2311 system residence file and was originally created by IBM in 1975.

POWER II was a separate package provided on a card-image tape created in 1977.

Because the 2311 is relatively small, we will migrate the 2311 distribution to 2314. Because DOS/360 did not support transfer of a system residence from 2311 to 2314, we will use the CVT11RES utility to do the transfer.

When paying customers migrated from 2311 to 2314, they would order new distribution materials from IBM, install them, and then recompile all of their programs. Recompiling the programs was not really an extra step; migration from 2311 to 2314 required changes to most programs at a site.
