Dooars photographers Association as its name suggests is a league of same minded people from the Dooars region of West Bengal in India who not only takes photographs with their camera but loves this fine art by their hearts. Most of the members are amateurs by nature as they are associated with different jobs for their livings but the affection to photography has brought them together and this Association gives them a platform to accomplish their desire to do something innovative & novel. Derived from the word 'doors' (doors to Bhutan), the Dooars region constitutes the plains of Darjeeling District, the whole of Jalpaiguri district and Alipurduar district and the upper region of Cooch Behar district in West Bengal and the districts of Dhubri, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Goalpara and Bongaigaon in the state of Assam. This region is gifted with some exceptional & rare variety of flora & fauna e.g. clouded leopard, single horned rhino, various species of hornbills, rarest of butterflies to say the least. The landscapes are mesmerizing as the Mighty Himalaya meets the plain here. The lively rivers & rivulets are just indicator of the lively nature of the native people. Some ethnic tribes including the Bodo in Assam, and the Rabha, the Mech, the Toto, the Koch Rajbongshi, the Tamang/Murmi, the Limbu, the Lepcha in Bengal are found here. Showcasing the variety of their traditions & customs of the native people, bringing forth the rich cultural heritage, everyday struggle for life of common man, their joy & sorrow, the bio diversity, the eye pleasing beauty of nature, is the main purpose of these photography enthusiast people and through this activity awareness is spread for the conservation of nature and its inhabitants in their purest form. Though by definition Photography is the science, art and practice of creating durable images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, either electronically by means of an image sensor, or chemically by means of a light sensitive material such as photographic film; the definition of photography to the members of DPA is to capture the moment of joy, sorrow, the endless struggle of life against all odds, the beauty of nature through a perfect combination of eye, mind and instrument.
