Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, was born in Zumarraga, Gipuzkoa, in 1502, and he died on August the 20th, 1572. A man from Gipuzkoa, military, explorer and conqueror, he was the founder of the Philipine capital of Manila.
Following orders from Felipe II, he crossed the Pacific Ocean and in 1565 he did the first European settlement, later in honor to the king, he took the island in name of The Philippines. The name was fixed on June 24, 1571 in Manila, after a long fight.
After The Philippines put the capital of Manila, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi moved to Manila until his death. Felipe II wanted to make him captain and governor of The Philippines for life, when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi was going through economic problems and health problemns.
