Overview
If you have a curiosity about the nervous system, please consider pursuing it at Boston Children's Hospital. We continuously seek to invigorate our research programs with new perspectives.
We are pleased to highlight a partnership between the F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center and Bunker Hill Community College's Learn & Earn program. Through this partnership, BHCC students conduct summer research in neuroscience labs while earning course credit and wages.
Prior research experience is not required.

Program Details
The Research Internship is a semester-long experience that pairs BHCC students with labs of Boston Children's Hospital. Each intern experiences how scientific questions are posed and pursued, whether those questions concern the nervous system's basic workings, diseases, or treatments. Interns have opportunities to make discoveries, hone skills, and gain colleagues. The internship has three main components:
RESEARCH PROJECT
Research is the primary focus of the program. Interns gain experience in the steps that lead from posing a scientific question to communicating the findings, whether the approach is experimental, computational, or theoretical.
Interns are immersed in their host labs, where they interact with the principal investigator and lab members. We encourage each lab to designate a mentor who provides day-to-day guidance and helps to ensure a meaningful research experience. Interns present their research in a poster session at the conclusion of the semester.
BOOT CAMP
Interns are oriented with a series of modules concerning neuroscience, laboratory skills, and practicalities like biosafety. This boot camp lasts about a week. It is operated by members of our research community.
WORKSHOPS
Customized, periodic workshops foster the scientific and professional development of our interns. Among the topics covered are science communication, critical reading of the scientific literature, and career development. Workshops are led by members of our research community.
BCH Neurobiology labs and their research interests may be found in the web pages of the F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center and the Rosamund Stone Zander and Hansjoerg Wyss Translational Neuroscience Center. We are interconnected with communities that include Harvard Medical School, Harvard University, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and the Division of Sleep Medicine of Harvard Medical School. Thus, interns have opportunities to connect with the wider research community.
