Introductions

Geeks can be really cool! Consider Ajay Bhatt!

Video: Inside Imangi, Creators of 'Temple Run' (Check out Imangi Studios)

The Minecraft videos we played before class were "Minecraft Timelapse - Red Rock City" and "Minecraft Timelapse - Fallen Kingdom Set (Captain Sparklez)".

Gamesalad is the free program for Windows and Apple computers I mentioned which can be used for game development on iOS and Android. Gamesalad Cookbook is the site with tutorials to learn Gamesalad. Hopefully in upcoming months we'll offer a Gamesalad Camp through Div Jr.!

Tell other people at your table about:

    1. One new Scratch block or technique you learned about yesterday

    2. One cool Scratch game you found and played yesterday (If you didn't save it to your Scratch profile FAVORITES, please do!)

Goals

    1. Share our Maze games from yesterday and our game learning

    2. Learn new ways to create games

    3. Create a new game

Explore and Play

To see what's possible with game design in Scratch, check out these examples:

  1. Flea 1.5

  2. Spikefur

  3. Clothing Design Game

  4. Fade

  5. Tennis

Some of these were included in Karen Brennan's ScratchED post, "BLC Pre-Conference Workshop: Let's Play! Game Design with Scratch - Monday, July 15, 2012"

In addition to Maze games (which we learned about yesterday) several other common game types are possible in Scratch:

CREATE

These blocks (PDF) are very helpful for creating games in Scratch.

Brainstorm ideas for games with others at your table, then we'll discuss them together as a class.

Plan and start your own game in Scratch. (Consider drawing some pictures to make your plans. Discuss it with someone else too and get their ideas.)

These are the steps we used to "merge sprites" today, which is described on this Scratch forum post:

    1. export the costume you want to merge into another sprite

    2. open the target sprite's costume

    3. import the exported costume into the paint editor

    4. place it anywhere you like

SHARE

Please upload / share the projects you create today to your Scratch profile. This Scratch project explains how! (Press the spacebar to move between slides.)

Here are some questions we'll ask and discuss as we share our Scratch projects:

    1. How did you do that?

    2. What did you get stuck on? How did you get unstuck?

    3. What are you most proud of? Why?

    4. What might you want to do next?

Remember you can check out and link to your classmates' Scratch profiles at the bottom of our July 2012 Scratch Camp homepage.
