Memorial Tower at Dingle
100th Anniversary
August 1912-August 2012
The Memorial Tower
A special celebration, made possible by funding from Halifax Regional Municipality, took place at the Dingle in Fleming Park on Natal Day, August 6, 2012 between 11 am and 2 pm. On hand were Sir Sandford Fleming, the Duke of Connaught and his daughter, Princess Patricia, Mayor Frederick Bligh and other dignitaries, strolling through Fleming Park celebrating the events of 100 years ago. Sir Sandford Fleming was instrumental in having this Tower built to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Representative Government in Nova Scotia (1758-1908). Members of Mainland South Heritage Society played a role in re-enacting the above characters.

The Mainland South Heritage Society and Friends of Sir Sandford Fleming Park invited residents and visitors of all ages to dress in 1912 fashion to enjoy the activities at the Dingle that day. The Bedford Brass Quintet and Quarter Note Singers performed music from the 1912 era, plus more music by Spectrum followed. Photographic displays, souvenir commemorative pins, heritage walks, children’s games, contests, and food (hotdogs, lemonade, ice cream and birthday cake) were all part of this historic celebration, and it was free.
In 2013, 2014, 2015 2016 and 2017 on Natal Day, Mainland South Heritage Society participated again in the annual Dingle Beach Party.

This is an excellent moving slide show which shows the plaques that are on the interior walls of the tower, placed there in 1912 when the Memorial Tower first opened.
