Plantain
Plantain
Work in progress - moving from Google classic to new site
Botanical name
Musa paradisiaca
Also called
Bundi or Boondi (in Fiji)
Plantains are very similar to bananas, but are thicker and slightly bigger. They are used more as a vegetable than a fruit and usually eaten cooked. You can boil, steam or fry them - pretty much how you would cook potatoes.
I use them to make puttu, which is a lightly spiced side dish made from boiled, grated plantains, and to make crispy chips.
Nutritional value
Plantains are a good source of Vitamins A and C and potassium.
