Small Scale Industries:
Industrialization in Shivamogga district started during Late Sir M.Visweswaraya's period. He started Mysore Iron and Steel ltd., in Bhadravathi during 1923 and Mysore Paper Mills in Bhadravathi in 1936. He started Sandal wood oil industry in Shivamogga. Later employees from Mysore Iron and Steel Ltd., and Harihar Kirloskar started foundry units in Shivamogga. Today Shivamogga is catering the needs of world automobile industry. Nearly 11 casting and auto components units are exporting their products to foreign countries. People are very enterprising. Many foundry and auto –components units have got ISO certification. A foundry chapater has been started in Shivamogga. There are 35 member units.
The real industrial revolution started by Late Sri T.V.Narayana Shastry. He motivated many unemployed youth to start general engineering, auto-service, agriculture implements, tyre retrading, tractor trailor building, auto components, foundry units.
As paddy is major agriculture crop in this district there are many rice mills in Shivamogga and Shikaripura taluk. Not only in these two taluks the other taluks also have rice mills. The rice is consumed by Kerala state.
Sagar is famous for rural artisans. Sandal wood carving, rose wood furnitures and teak wood furnitures are famous in this area. Government of Karnataka has set up sandal wood complex in Sagar and Soraba taluk. To encourage this activity Government has started 2 years certificate course from 2011-12. Artisan Training Institute of Sagar is also providing training in Sandal wood carving, carpentry, Cane and Bamboo furniture making.
Heggodu a village of Sagar taluk is famous for Khadhi products. An integrated Khadhi unit has been established by Ghandhi followers.
Shiralkoppa a town from Shikaripura taluk is also famous for carpentry units.
The other activities are Areca processing, fruit processing, areca leaf products production, tiles production, readymade garments etc. As the district is rice in agro and horticulture resources Government of Karnataka has established a Food Park at Sogane village of Shivamogga taluk.
As Soraba taluk is famous for pineapple a pineapple processing unit a started its production. Shiralkoppa area is famous for mangos. It has famous mango processing units like MN Pickles, Jyothi Pickles etc.
As on 31/3/2017 there are 18710 small scale industries registered with DIC in Shivamogga district with an investment of Rs.60842 lakhs providing employment to 82215 people.
Medium and Large Scale Industries:
There are 12 Large and Medium Scale Industries with an investment of Rs.1102.66 crore providing employment to 7006 people in Shivamogga district.
Late Sir M.Visveswarya, Architectch of Indian Industry started 2 Mega industries namely Visveswaraya Iron and Steel ltd., Mysore Paper Mills during 1923 and 1936 respectively in Bhadravathi of Shivamogga district.
The major share of large and medium scale industries is from foundry sector. There are four l & m industries viz., Visveswaraya Iron and Steel ltd., Bhadravathi, Shanthala Sperocast Pvt. Ltd., No.36-B, Machenahalli Indl.Area, Shivamogga, Perfect Alloy Components Pvt. Ltd., Savalanga Road, Navile, Shivamogga, .Malnadu Alloy Castings, Pl.ot No.36-A,MAchenahalli Indl.Area,Shivamogga Pearlite Liners Pvt. Ltd.,N.T.Road,Shivamogga producing S.G.Iron & Grey Iron Castings, I.C.Engine Parts, Burbo Charger Parts, Rough Alloy Steel & Nickel Castings, Cyliner Liners, Breakdrums, CI Castings.
Second sector is paper industry. There are three industries namely Mysore Paper Mills, Bhadravathi, Paper Package Pvt. Ltd., Mandli Kallur Indl. Area, Shimoga, Bhadra Packaids Pvt. Ltd., Bommanahalli, Bhadravathi Tq, producing paper, kraft paper and Duplex Board, White Greay Board etc.
Other sectors are power (Ambuthirtha Power Pvt. Ltd., Bus Stand Road, Jogfals, Sagar Tq. Shivamogga Dist.), oxygen (MSPL Gases Ltd., Steel Authority of India Ltd., VISL, Bhadravathi), milk and diary products (Shivamogga Milk Union Ltd., Machenahalli, Shimoga Tq.), startch (Bharath Starch Industries, Machenahalli Indl.Area, Nidige Post, Shivamogga Tq.)
IT industry has started performing in this district. Exchanging IT Solutions with an investment of Rs.80 Crores has started in Nidhige IT park providing employment to 1000 techies.
Textile industry has started its game in Shivamogga district. Shahi export ltd., an integrated textile plant with an investment of Rs.500 crores has started production of its readymade garment section in Nidhige Industrial Area, Nidhige. The unit is estimated to provide employment to 10000 unemployed youth.
