Philosophy of Teaching
St. Paul VI in his Evangelii Nuntiandi writes, “‘Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he does listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses’” (par 41). With that in mind, I believe essentially that every child can learn. Therefore, I provide challenges for my students. I design my instructional activities and assessments to construct knowledge, rather than simply to reproduce facts and ideas--a notion that I abhor. Therefore, I choose enduring concepts, theories, and skills that help my students become responsible and informed citizens, as well as self-directed, lifelong learners.
As an academic, I believe that inquiry and exploration foster thinking. So, in planning the scope and sequence of my instruction and assessment, I address as many of the multiple intelligences as possible to provide challenges for all students, no matter their strengths or weaknesses. I enjoy giving students as many opportunities as possible to make decisions and to reflect on their learning.
