Ham Radio

Looking top learn about Amateur Radio

(also called Ham radio)?

We at Denton County CERT have a close relationship with the ham radio community and partner with the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) origination to provide communication support when deploy or are activated.  Ham radio is always available, even when other communication methods are down or not available.  When all else fails - There is Ham Radio!

Amateur Radio is a service licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  Operators must hold a valid license to operate on designated ham radio frequencies.  Fortunately, getting licensed has become fairly simple.  You need to pass a 35 question multiple choice exam with at least 26 correct answers.  Exams are given in person and online in remote exam sessions via Zoom.

Training

Local area amateur radio clubs do occasionally host formal training classes.  Self-study is also available using very well written study guides.  I can recommend the two below for your first license (Technician Class License is he first license class).  There are two more license classes after Technician.  Each step up opens the operator to the ability to use more frequency bands.  Some folks are very happy with their Technician Class License and stay there.

2022 - 2026 Technician Class

The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual

is another great study guide

These can both be purchased on Amazon

You can also email the training coordinator at the Denton County Amateur Radio Association, mention your interest in amateur radio and ask for a list of study and exam preparation resources.  That email address is training@dcara.net

Practice Tests

As you study, we highly recommend that you take practice tests.  Keep taking practice tests until you routinely get 85% or better.  The web sites below all use the same actual exam question pool that the real Licensing Exam utilize.  You will be seeing actual exam questions.   Now remember there are 423 questions in the current technican class test pool, so while you may not see all of them, these practice tests will give you a good sense of whatto expect on the exam and eveluate your readiness to take the exam.

Hamstudy.org (I recommend using "Study Mode", which remember the question you need more practice on)

Finding an Exam Location

Exams are offered both in-person and online in remote, web based exam session which utilize Zoom.  During the online remote exams, you use you PC/Laptop camera so the examiners can see the room you are in and watch you during the exam.  They will also have you share your PC desktop so they can see what you are seeing on your screen.

You can find listing of both in-person and remote exams at hamstudy.org/sessions

If you have a ham radio license, or if you get one, be sure to let Brenda know so we can note that in your CERT records.
