Today you will be examining the following acids:
Vinegar, Sprite, Stomach Acid, Battery Acid, Coke
Each acid should be written on the top of it’s own page in your lab notebook with all of the data, calculations, equations, and pictures NEATLY organized!!!!!!! If I have to decipher it, I am not grading it!
Data/Information for each acid:
Measure the pH of the substance.
Use the pH to calculate the hydrogen ion concentration, hydroxide ion concentration, and pOH. Be sure to include units when necessary.
Identify the chemical formula and name for the main acid in the substance. Use the internet and/or the label to assist you.
Write the ionization equation for the acid in water. Write the equations twice, once including water (with H3O+) and once not including water (with H+).
Draw a picture to represent what is present in the solution. Include water in your picture.
Look up the ka values for each acid. Remember strong acids do not have a ka value since they completely ionize.
When you are all done:
make a list of all your strong acids
make a list of all your weak acids (with ka values), put them in order of strongest to weakest.
