Dr. Debanik Roy received Bachelor of Engineering degree in Production Engg. from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India in 1990, securing the topmost position in order of merit. He obtained M.Tech. degree in 1993 from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India with specialization in Manufacturing Engg. & Robotics, topping the merit list. During 1993-1995, he was engaged with doctoral research in the field of robotics (tele-manipulation & remote control) and was awarded Doctorate degree from Jadavpur University in 1997. Dr. Roy joined Automation Division, Tata Steel, India after completion of Ph.D. work and was actively involved in robotics projects there. Thenafter, Dr. Roy joined Robotics Research Centre, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 1998 as Research Faculty and did research-based work in the field of underwater robotics. Since 1999, Dr. Roy has been associated with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India. He was with the Robotics division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai from 1999 to 2008. From Jan., 2009 to April, 2018, Dr. Roy headed the Engineering Science Advisory Committee of Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), DAE. After a successful tenure at BRNS, Dr. Roy re-joined Division of Remote Handling & Robotics (DRHR), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in May, 2018 with new research mandate. Dr. Roy is also serving as an adjunct Professor faculty of Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) since 2009. Dr. Roy was a senate member of PDPM Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing- Jabalpur, India during 2016-2020. Besides, Dr. Roy is a visiting professor of SRM Institute of Science & Technology, Tamil Nadu, India, MNIT-Jaipur and Research Advisor & Mentor of IIIT-Nagpur, IIT-Indore & GLA University, Mathura, India.
Dr. Roy has attained many professional benchmarks, including best technical paper prize, honorary membership of technical committee on robotics of IASTED, Canada, overseas visiting professorship, guest speakers at various international conferences etc. He has been distinguished as a biographee in “Marquis Who’s Who in the World” in three successive editions, namely, 2007, 2008 & 2010 and also honoured by the International Biographical Centre, U.K. He is actively associated as editorial board member of several peer-reviewed international journals in robotics & automation and computational mathematics. He is actively involved in various international conferences in robotics, serving as a member of the international programme as well as organizing committee(s). His research interest goes in the domain of robot grippers, gripper sensors, flexible manipulator, underwater robotics, tele-manipulation and web-mediated robotics. He has authored over 180 technical papers till date, published in referred journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. Dr. Roy has also authored two books on applications of robotics (published by Lambert®, Germany) and twelve book-chapters, published by Springer, InTech®, IOP & others, in the domain of robotic gripper and sensor fusion. In October 2014, Dr. Roy received the DAE Award for Excellence in Science & Technology (as part of the Group Achievement Award) for his contribution made in DAE programmes till date. Dr. Roy and his research team at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design & Manufacturing-Jabalpur have secured the first prize for innovating a novel process of Incremental Sheet Metal Forming at International Forming Technology Exhibition, “IMTEX Forming-2016” held at Bengaluru, India.
Dr. Roy has been nominated as member of the Programme Advisory Committee (Civil & Mechanical Engineering) of the Science & Engineering Research Board of Department of Science & Technology (DST-SERB), Govt. of India in Nov., 2018. Subsequently, Dr. Roy has been nominated as Member of the Technical Advisory Committee of Gujarat State Science & Technology Innovation Policy, Gujarat, India in March, 2019.
Marquis Who’s Who in the World”, USA has conferred ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to Dr. Roy in Nov., 2018 for his outstanding scholastic excellence in the field of robotics, automation & manufacturing.
