Welcome to FYE 1000: First Year Experience! In short, this course will help you develop behaviors you need to be successful in academia as well as work life. My name is Deanna Keller (feel free to call me by my first name), and I'm your instructor in this class. I'm excited to be working with you--this is one of my favorite classes to teach! You may find this will be one of your favorite classes too.
Over the course of our time together, we'll have lively discussions, and a variety of speakers from campus--speakers that will talk about the benefits that YOU get as part of the Lake Superior College Community. There will always be a candy basket and music as you enter the room.
Here's a brief explanation for how to the course works:
Any assignment that is given during class will have a Sunday 11:00 pm deadline.
Another important point: Because the course is just eight weeks long, it's important to follow the course schedule carefully, so you won't fall behind. The course is graded A-F. If you stay organized about due dates and turn in work on time, you should have no problems passing the class with a very good grade. Keep in mind, I don't give grades. You get the grade you earn by consistently showing up to class, participating, and turning in your work.
If you have any questions at all as you get going, don't hesitate to contact me! You can do so in two ways:
by emailing me directly (click "Communications" -- "Classlist" -- my name on the list)
by instant messaging me (click the envelope-icon in the upper right hand corner of the page)
Each week I'll post an announcement letting you know what to expect for the week.
The first week will be all about building a community of learners and getting to know each other. Who knows, your next best friend may be someone you meet in class!
Make sure you check out the weekly announcement in D2L/Brightspace for what we'll be doing each week as well as reminders about what's due.
Welcome again, and let's get started!
