ARTIST STATEMENT

I'm continuing to work on my series of historic saddle paintings! I love the skilled craft put into these cowboy "tools"! See some of my other paintings like the prickly pear painting detail above.

My latest series is the close up Saddle Details. This series of paintings showcases these iconic western tools (often antique or historic) that have been handmade with so many hours of detailed amazing craftsmanship! Every saddle is unique to an era, a cowboy, a craftsman, a horse, a purpose, a style, a time...To me, they are worthy of a portrait, a study, a personality highlight. I've chosen an intimate view, usually in a larger scale, to truly capture this icon of the west.
Cowboys rely on this tool and are very connected to their own unique saddle. We see the cowboy depicted in a beautiful landscape quite a bit. I feel this is the cowboy's view! He relies on this amazing crafted tool for his work. Is a cowboy a cowboy without a saddle? I am also exploring other handmade southwestern icons in this intimate format.

Artist statement:

My larger saddle series depicts historic tooled saddles with details of handcraft, patina, age, use & wear so often overlooked because of being utilitarian, decorative or plain worn out. The historic cowboy is shown in landscapes on a horse but is living in that saddle. His physical experience is up close in a saddle molded to that cowboy through those landscapes. The cowboy's view is his saddle, unique & significant to his cowboy life. My paintings are representational & closer have abstract, painterly quality.

In my landscapes & southwest paintings, I hope to evoke the mood of a time gone. The Southern California, Early California history, Spanish, Mexican, Native American, Southwestern, Western, and New Mexican history is still a fascinating area of interest that I am continuing to explore.
