Objection: Dan Mohler’s teaching is false because he teaches that once you are born again, there is no sin that can pull you away. (“I’ve never heard Dan Mohler… say that this is actually damnable - to go back to sin and practice it again and stay in it and not repent of it.”)
Thoughts: Dan has taught on many, many occasions about “violating your conscience and shipwrecking your faith.” But here is another sample teaching (@4:59) that speaks to the objection presented above. Context: Dan is responding to the question, “How far can a child of God backslide and still be saved?”
5:30 - I don’t preach “once saved, always saved.” I believe you can pick up your own will - your own life - and I believe you can walk a million miles away from Jesus. And I believe that it’s a very scary, bad thing. Because once you have the knowledge of truth and walk away, that’s worse than if you never heard in the first place. So I believe that people... There is so much scripture that we could turn to about that…
5:55 - [Brief participant testimony of backsliding and restoration]
6:52 - Right. No, that’s good but that’s a repentant heart. That’s an alive heart. There’s people that let their hearts be hard - or “whatever” [just not caring]. They’ve tasted the goodness of the Lord and then they let life be their teacher or whatever, and they don’t come [back to God] that way. But I’ve seen people go [away quickly, without hesitation (hand motions)].
7:10 - I’m not saying that just because you backslide [that] you’re cut off. I’m not saying that. I’m saying, if you don’t return… But here’s the scary part. Some people carry that theology that “Hey, God will always love me. Hey, He knows my heart. I’ll go over here. [But] He’ll forgive me.” That’s a non-repentant heart. That’s a dangerous, scary, awful place. Don’t anyone even consider to think there because there’s no place for repentance there. Because you are truly not in godly sorrow. You’re actually playing a definition of grace that isn’t true.
7:38 - [Teaching on grace] See, there’s a lot of teaching on grace nowadays. And everybody is calling it “the grace revolution” and stuff. And there is a lot of teachers concerned. And the reason they are [concerned] is because it’s grace preached apart from transformation. If you are preaching grace apart from transformation, it’s perversion. The reason for grace IS transformation. Grace is what changes your life to make you more like Him. Grace doesn’t just allow you to keep living however you are living.
8:04 - [Teaching on mercy vs. grace] We get mercy and grace confused. Mercy brings you back when you have no right to come back. But grace transforms you into His image. So everybody is talking about grace. You have to be careful that you are not just actually talking about mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. And it’s the goodness of God that leads men to change.
8:25 - It’s always been about repentance. John the Baptist, Jesus and Peter - "Repent, for the kingdom is here. Repent, for the kingdom is here. Repent…" So what this brother is talking about is: he’s saved - he’s moving in God - something happened. You can get deceived along the way. You can let something just catch you - hurt your heart. You can lose a loved one and just stay on it for a while and just be in a funk and not even realize [that] four years went by. And all of the sudden you can be like, “Where have I been.” Come on, that doesn’t mean that you are evil and wicked and going to hell. You just let life speak louder than truth. But when your heart sees it and realizes it and you go, “Ahhh” and you actually care… that’s your born again... - that’s your inside man - your inner man crying out. So Jesus is loving and merciful and we grow. I don’t think that we have to lose that kind of time.
9:16 - But there is people that if you read… There’s a lot of scriptures… Jesus can come and find you eating and drinking and beating your fellow servants. That means bashing, backbiting, gossiping, demeaning… And He comes and you are in that place - just feeding your flesh and talking about your sister and brothers. And He says that you’ll be cut in two and given your portion with the unbelievers. That’s pretty heavy scripture.
9:43 - He’s not talking about a backsliding person. He’s talking about a person that has disregarded the position of their heart and said, “Whatever…” You can really become apostate and walk away. There are too many scriptures that talk about it.
