I use a community-engaged pedagogical approach. This means that I use community engagement as a tool for connecting course content to the lived experiences of our local and global neighbors. This approach:
allows students to see the relevancy of the course content,
respects and supports that students do, in fact, want to know more about the communities in which they live, and
creates opportunities for students to consider their own role in promoting social and environmental justice.
This has included hosting guest speakers, assigning local resident narratives and government reports, and working with community partners to design problem-based projects that students use systems thinking approaches to propose pathways toward greater social and environmental justice.
