Dalziel S1/S2 Versus Strathaven - Sunday, 6th October 2013

A last minute fixture saw Strathaven S1/S2s travel to Dalziel Park on Sunday. Strathaven kicked off and Declan O’Shea caught the ball cleanly and ran it back towards the visitors before being tackled just inside the Dalziel half. Strathaven won the ball but the counter-attack was stopped when Jamie Lang tackled and ripped the ball. A charge up the centre by Craig Peters was stopped just short of the line, denying Dalziel first points but shortly afterwards a punt by Strathaven was caught by Lewis Tomlinson who’s run put Ruaridh Waddell into space to score a try for Dalziel. Shortly after the restart, Zac Knox won the ball and charged through several tackles to score another try for Dalziel, and just before the break, another attack by Knox was stopped just short of the line but he popped the ball to Daniel Bartlett who sidestepped to go over and score a third.

At the start of the second period the kick-off was caught cleanly by Scott Bell who charged straight through the opposition to score, Waddell converting. Strathaven worked the ball clear but were only stopped from scoring by Jordan Wallace who caught and brought down the Strathaven player.

After some further loose play, Benjamin Lewis picked up from the back of the scrum and grubber kicked through, chasing it and managing to get a hand to it to score.

Strathaven strung together several phases of play and were only stopped when Hayden Muir tackled and ripped the ball. Waddell grubber kicked through and caught the Strathaven full-back when he tried to field the ball, with Bell and Peters winning the ball. Peters went over but failed to ground the ball.

From the resulting scrum, Liam Coltart hooked the ball and Lewis fed Waddell who went round the blind side to score.

Thomas Law, in his first game for Dalziel, made a cracking tackle to kill another Strathaven attack but the pressure eventually told and Strathaven eventually scored their first try of the game.

The third period kick-off was fielded and passed to Bell who charged through to score another for Dalziel, with O’Shea kicking the conversion.

Another promising attack resulted from Andrew Tweedie fielding the ball in the middle of the pitch and though tackled, was held up with Conor Silvey and Jamie Smith joining the maul to drive it forward to make good ground before collapsing. The ball went loose and was knocked forward but this time it was Strathaven who managed to put a player into space and they scored in what was the final movement of the game.

Final score 39-10 to Dalziel.

Dalziel S1/S2 Versus Cumbernauld - Sunday, 29th September 2013

A surprising number of Dalziel players made it to Cumbernauld on Sunday. With some Cumbernauld players donning a Dalziel strip to even up the sides, they managed to play three 20 minute periods starting with 14 players and were at times down to 12 a side on a small “course rugby” pitch with a wonky crossbars.

Cumberauld’s kick-off was caught cleanly by Jordan Wallace, who then ran the ball back at the home team. He made it as far as the half-way before passing through Ruaridh Waddell to Scott Bell who was caught inside the 22 by the Cumbernauld full-back with a high tackle. Waddell kicked the resulting penalty into touch close to the Cumbernauld try line but Cumbernauld stole the ball at the line-out and poor tackling let Cumbernauld score the first try, which they failed to convert. Shortly afterwards, Jamie Lang fed Bell in space and he stormed through to score, Waddell converting.

Cumbernauld started again with a tap and pass and strung together several phases before Dalziel won a turnover, with Zac Knox making ground and feeding Bell, who ran from the half-way to score his second try.

Conor Silvey retired after suffering a kick in the eye, and the teams were shifted around to even up the sides again. Poor tackling after a lineout allowed Cambuslang to break through to score a converted try and after a further period of broken play, the home side again broke through to finish the first period with a converted try.

Waddell’s restart was chased by Wallace who caught the Cumbernauld catcher but the home side kept possession and went on to run the ball back at the visitors, scoring a converted try. Shortly afterwards, failing to get to the ball directly, Bell picked up the Cumbernauld player and carried him 15 yards down the pitch but couldn’t win possession back and the Cumbernauld attack ended with a foot in touch near the Dalziel line. The visitors won the line with Lang feeding Waddell to clear the line with a punt from the Dalziel line to half-way. Cumbernauld secured the ball from the subsequent lineout and this time made it to the line to score, with the conversion attempt hitting the post. Further poor tackling saw Cumbernauld score a third try but from the restart, Dalziel attacked and Knox broke through several tackles to score in the corner with Waddell converting. Another try from Cumbernauld ended the second period. Silvey had come back for a period but had to retire again at this point.

Cumbernauld offered to transfer one of their better tacklers to help strengthen the Dalziel defence. Cumbernauld failed to field Waddell’s kick-off and the ball bounced out inside the home side’s 22. The home side failed to clear their lines and Dalziel won a scrum inside the Cumbernauld 22 with Lang feeding Waddell who went round the blind-side, breaking through two tackles to score, and then going on to convert his try.

Cumbernauld restarted but their attack ended with a knock-on inside the Dalziel 22. Lang fed Waddell who again went blind, feeding Knox who was tackled around the half-way and passed to Wallace who passed straight on to Bell who stormed up the line to score in the corner. Waddell converted. The final try was a well worked try in the corner by Cumbernauld.

Final score was 46-33 to Cumbernauld.

Scorers were Scott Bell (3 Tries), Zac Knox (1 Try), Ruaridh Waddell (1 Try and 4 Conversions).

Cumbernauld scored 8 Tries & 3 Conversions.

Dalziel/Dumfries S1/S2 Versus Cumnock - Sunday, 22nd September 2013

Dalziel/Dumfries S1 versus Cumnock S1

The Dalziel S1 team travelled to Cumnock. In almost perfect rugby conditions the S1 Dalziel team joined forces with the Dumfries S1 team (given the temporary name of the' Blues' to avoid confusion) to take on Cumnock S1.

1st Half:

Blues started well scoring through a Dumfries player. Andrew Tweddie tried his foot at a conversion but unfortunately on this occasion fell slightly short. Cumnock soon scored their first try however failed to convert. For two teams who had never met before, Dumfries and Dalziel began to gel and shine as the mighty 'Blues' with some displays of brilliant tackling and rucking. Cumnock however managed to score 2 more tries and convert both.

2nd Half:

Cumnock started the second half scoring 2 quick tries but with the mighty 'Blues' now familiar with each others’ play, managed some good passing to enable Jordan Wallace to score, unfortunately the Dumfries player was unable to make the conversion. With pressure placed on the Cumnock team through some good defensive play the 'Blues' scored again through a Dumfries player and the conversion was made successfully. Cumnock scored again quickly, converting, adding to the score sheet. Benjamin Lewis was able to pick up a loose ball after some Cumnock fumbling and quickly ran toward the try line scoring and making the conversion. After a tight, well contested half from the 'Blues' and Cumnock, Cumnock ran in one more try which was converted. A good effort from the 'Blues' who combined to form a team that did well to keep the S1 Cumnock players on their toes.

Final score was 45 v 24 in favour of Cumnock.

Dalziel/Dumfries S2 versus Cumnock S2

1st Half

Dalziel/Dumfries looked dominant from the start with Ruaridh Waddell making a break down the wing to score a try and then convert from a difficult angle. It wasn't long before Waddell was on the score sheet again after making a run from 10m inside his own half and showing some brilliant side stepping skills to get his second with Declan O'Shea this time converting the kick. The combined Dalziel/Dumfries continued to show dominance with a Dumfries player taking a direct route from a play which started in his own 22m to score once again. Waddell coverts. Constant pressure from the combined team sees a dropped ball by Cumnock kicked through by Waddell to allow the chasing Dumfries player to score. O'Shea converts. With Cumnock struggling to find any shape and maintain a defensive line the combined team scored again from a good set of pick and drive phases eventually putting them over the line. Waddell converts. With the end of the first half approaching and Cumnock once again on the back foot with a scrum deep in their own half the Dumfries number 9 was quick to pick the ball from the back of the scrum and dart over the line for another try. O'Shea converts.

2nd Half

At the start of the second half Cumnock’s defense seemed to be much better with a long period of play in and around the center of the pitch, but again the combined team started to pile on the pressure and some good offloading allows Waddell to break away down the wing and score the first try of the second half. The conversion was missed this time from a very difficult angle. Cumnock tried to mount a fightback but with some tenacious work from the Dumfries number 7 he turns the ball over and then smashes his way through the defense to score. O'Shea converts. With the workload from the combined team it wasn't long before another try was scored. Lewis Tomlinson worked hard in the midfield to offload to the supporting Dumfries center who uses the width of the pitch to get the try having put in a beautiful dummy on the way. Waddell Converts. With the last few minutes remaining the combined team once again scored, this time coming from Scott Bell who in a defensive tackle ripped the ball from the attacker to then sprint the length of the pitch and score. O'Shea converts.

Overall the combined Dalziel/Dumfries proved far too strong for Cumnock with the forward working tirelessly to then allow the backs to be released and utilize their speed and agility.

Final Score Dalziel/Dumfries 68 - 0 Cumnock

Trys - Waddell 2, Bell 1, Dumfries 7

Conversions - Waddell 4, O'Shea 5

S1/S2 Dalziel V Cumnock

1st Half

Cumnock began the match quick of the mark and caught Dalziel napping to score an early first try but missed the conversion. Gaining confidence from the early try Cumnock took the advantage while Dalziel were still trying to organize their defensive line and again scored after some sloppy tackling from Dalziel, but again missed the conversion. Dalziel managed to regain their composure and after some good phases of play Cumnock found themselves pressed back in their own 5m area. Their scrum half kicks a clearing ball which Craig Peters was under to collect soundly. He then made some yards himself and after taking some tackles releases to ball to Ruaridh Waddell whose pace was too much for the defense scores. O'Shea converts. Again though Dalziel were not quick enough to re-organize at the restart and Cumnock went through to score, which could have been avoided had it not been for some poor Dalziel tackling. With half time approaching Dalziel once again rallied and pressed forward. A knock on gave Cumnock a scrum in their own half. With some sharp thinking from Dalziel Scrum half O'Shea he was on his counterpart as soon as the ball was out of the scrum ripping from him and passing it to the charging Tomlinson who's speed and strength carried him over the line for the try. Waddell Converts.

2nd Half

The Dalziel coaches must have had some strong words at half time as they came out much more aware and ready for the start. Cumnock took the restart with Declan O'Shea catching it safely and then passing it along the line to Waddell who sprints down the Line with Benjamin Lewis following him in close support, but he didn't need it and scored himself. O'Shea converts. Cumnock were still in the game though and continued to attack well and only the sprint from Scott Bell saved Dalziel from conceding another try as he bundled the attacker into touch. Cumnock continued to apply pressure though and it paid of again after they won their own lineout and then drove it forward to score a try which is converted easily. Dalziel didn't let it get them down though and Jordan Wallace worked hard to push through some big tackles and get the ball down in the corner for another try. Waddell coverts it from a very tight angle. With time almost up Scott Bell, who was just back on after receiving treatment to a cut on his head, showed his great work ethic and fought hard to turn the ball over. The backs were in great positioning and the ball was passed from one wing to the other were Ruaridh Waddell was once again on hand to add the finishing touch and score the try. O'Shea converts.

The Dalziel team worked very hard to come back from a shaky start and some questionable tackling but the held their nerve and composed themselves to get the victory. The S1/S2 mix gelled well and the S1 players showed some great courage up against the opposition S2 players.

Final score Dalziel 35 - 21 Cumnock

Trys Waddell 3, Tomlinson 1, Wallace 1,

Conversions Waddell 3, O'Shea 3

Some good play from Jordan Wallace on Dalziel’s try line prevented them from scoring and with a quick turnover of the ball and some brilliant passing saw Bell score with an almost uncontested run from inside Dalziel’s 22. Unfortunately Lewis wasn’t able to add more points missing the conversion. In the closest contested session Ayr quickly scored again, with O’Shea cross-kicking to an Ayr winger who went over to score for Ayr but also failing to convert. In the dying few minutes Craig Peters kicked from within Dalziel’s 22 to clear the ball, Andrew Findlay secured the ball for Dalziel and some great teamwork allowed Bell to run in another try with Benjamin Lewis scoring the conversion.

Dalziel should be very proud of themselves as they demonstrated some good rugby skills to secure the win.
