Q: Is there a cost to attend a meeting?
A: There is no cost to attend. The meetings are moderated by an adult hair-puller (not a therapist).
Q: What is the general feel of a typical meeting?
A: We offer a safe, non-judgmental environment where people are welcome to discuss how they developed their BFRB, the progress they have made, goals they have set, and strategies they use to reduce hair pulling or skin picking.
Q: Who moderates/facilitates the meetings?
A: An adult hair puller moderates the meetings. The meetings are not moderated or facilitated by a therapist.
Q: What is the format of the support group meetings?
A: We start with an opening statement to ground ourselves. Then we have discussion surrounding a specific topic for about 15 minutes. Then we will spend about 3-5 minutes per person (depending on number of attendees) checking in, where each person has an opportunity to talk about progress they have made in comparison with the goals we have set for ourselves. For first-time attendees, they are encouraged to discuss what they are looking for in the support group, and start thinking about small goals to set for themselves. At the conclusion of the meeting, we each state an attainable goal we would like to achieve over the next month and what we are going to do - the same or differently - to reach it.
Q: What should I do if I am attending a meeting for the first time?
A: First-time attendees are encouraged to discuss what they are looking for in the support group, and start thinking about small goals to set for themselves. At the conclusion of the meeting, we each have the option to decide on a goal we think we can reasonably reach over the next month which usually entails one small thing we are going to do - the same or differently - to reach it. Bring your questions and know that you are understood by others here in the DFW BFRB community!
Q: What if I I am not ready to attend an in-person meeting?
A: Meeting other people with a BFRB for the first time is a big step. You will know when the time is right for you. You may wish to join online resources through www.bfrb.org to connect with others in a virtual environment.
