Incarnation
(2013. 07. 30 ~ 08. 01)
This is an experimental real-time motion-capture performance. I used Xsen's motion-capture system with Motion Builder software for real-time interaction between the performer and 3D characters.
<Motion Capture Test>
This work was an official invitational media-performance for Pyoung-Chang Biennale (http://gwbien.org/).
This was a collaborative work with Jin Shin Park as the performer and Song-Yi Kim as the 3D artist.
Follow You
(2013)
I made a background moving image for Sun Lee's Korean Traditional singsing with Gayagum. This music is a modernized piece of Pansori Shim-Chung. Shim-Chung is a devoted daughter of a blind man, Shim-Bongsa. She sacrifices herself to make her father's eyes open.
This work was made with UDK (Unreal Developent Kit) which is normally used for making video games. It helped me making high quality 3D graphics and make it interactive within very short time.
Prototype
(2013)
"Prototype" is the Media Performance Show using Motion Capture system for 2013 SICAF. (Seoul International Cartoon and Animation)
My role was the Motion Capture technician helping the director and 3D artists to make this holographic visuals for the performance.
Port of Philadelphia
- Independence Seaport Museum-
(2007)
This is a 7:1 ratio film for five-screen multimedia experience that captures the evolution of the Port of Philadelphia and the role that it played in the development of a great city. The story is about a port and city that lie 110 miles inland that will inevitably become the fourth largest port in America, while also becoming a major focal point of American History. The film is presented through video, still images, narration and sound of a 5.1 surround sound system. It screens at the Independence Seaport Museum (http://www.phillyseaport.org/) in the newly installed Digital Theater featuring a Sky-Skan (http://www.skyskan.com/) five-screen, blended image projection system resembling a mini-Omnimax theater.
This project was a collaborative work of the Entertainment Technology Center (http://www.etc.cmu.edu/) and the Independence Seaport Museum, and it was funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. By mutual consent, that event is an approximately thirty minute linear narrative film depicting, describing, and illuminating the history of Philadelphia as a seaport.
The Holy Family
- Kirin Theater -
(2005)
The main theme of “Holy Family” is about reminiscence. It is a non-verbal play and all the performance is in slow motion. It depicts story like a picture rather than describing it using dialog. The goal was cause the audiences to have to listen to the unspoken stories with their heart.
This play consists of 15 different individual scenes, and each scene narrates a specific situation. The play progresses from dawn to night, from Spring to Winter, from birth to death, which is the natural circulation of time. The entire story in each scene is simple. It is intended to be like a rough sketch for a painting; by using the 'rough sketch,' each audience has the ability to make their own stories.
This work is from Kirin Theater (http://www.kirina.co.kr/) where I worked as the associate director. It premiered in 2005, and was invited to the “International Outdoor Performance Festival” in South Korea.
Han-Dan-Go-Gi
- Kirin Theater -
(2005)
“Han-Dan-Go-Gi” is a fiction based on the ancient history of Korea in B.C. 3000. The story is about a boy, “Bau”, who went to a Ssireum (Korean traditional wrestling) competition to help to re-establish his ruined family. The main theme and the purpose of the play is to give courage to Korean people in their attempt to overcome the current fallen economy.
The play has a live Korean traditional music orchestra with Pansori (traditional Korean narrative song). Also, this play encourages the audiences to participate freely and interact with performances.
Kirin Theater (http://www.kirina.co.kr/) premiered "Han-Dan-Go-Gi" in 2005, and it was held to commemorate the opening of the KPU Art Center (http://arts.kpu.ac.kr/index.do?) in 2007.
Memory
(2003)
“Memory” is one of the experimental movies from my work, “Epilogue,” which is a suite of short films depicting abstractly the emotions and feelings after losing a love. It was selected for the Digital Contents Festival for Youth in 2004.
It shows how a vivid memory of love turns into faint reminiscence after it has gone. This was filmed with an endoscope camera capturing a live performance.
Longing
(2003)
When longing for something is in your heart, it grows. You try to cut it off and delete it. However, it seems to have a 'read-only' property. The more you try to eliminate it, the more it lingers.
“Longing” is one of the experimental movies from my work, “Epilogue,” which is a suite of short films depicting abstractly the emotions and feelings after losing a love. It was selected for the Digital Contents Festival for Youth in 2004.
Manbong's Pho Restaurant
(2002)
“Manbong’s Pho Restaurant” was a musical play, which I wrote, composed and directed while I was an undergraduate student in 2002. It is a morality play about a man named “Manbong” whose principle in life was to act according to the situation. He always went belly up to those who seemed stronger or richer than him. Eventually, he sacrifices his lovable daughter because of his wrong beliefs.
This musical play was the first student-made musical show in the school’s history and it was also entirely financed by donations from fellow students. It played to a sold out crowd.
Mt. JIRI
- Heemangse Theater -
(2001)
“Mt. Jiri” was about joys and sorrows of the modern working class in South Korea and their hopes and dreams. It was a Korean opera, which offered me an opportunity to act on a professional theater stage.
I was one of the main actors and wore many hats in the play. It became my life turning point and I went from being a student in the law department to an aspiring artist.
