Study: The success of our SO program is due to the great support from parents and volunteer coaches. We expect for each class at least 2 volunteer parents to be present to help the coach in each class for study events. For build events we need more parent involvement, since the kids have to use and operate tools and such. It's preferred if we have a parent helping to every student in the build events.
Please talk to your event coach and help them out as much as you can.
Besides volunteering in class, you as parent may have access to other resources (e.g. from your workplace, or your neighbor/friend). If you know someone who could come in for a guest lecture to do one talk/lesson on the subject, that would go a long way for helping kids generate further interest in the topics. There are numerous ways you can help, so please talk to the event coach and other parents.
As a community, we have access to a wide range of resources. Let's help our students however we can.
Competition: Each school participating in any Science Olympiad tournament must contribute to that competition by providing volunteers who write tests and proctor events. Besides of the official part, it is always nice to have our own CVMS base camp at each tournament site. This base is a place where our students register first thing in the morning, find quick answers to numerous questions, receive directions to test rooms, have a snack ready after a test, and a lunch for all families. SO committee will cover the costs, but the camp and food must be held by parent volunteers.
Overall, Science Olympiad is a volunteer based organization. Your school head coach, event coaches, tournament organizators - all volunteer their time. It is expected that each SO family volunteer several times in different capacities during the season.
