Welcome to the 2024-2025 Science Olympiad program!
Description: Science Olympiad is a competition that includes a variety of different Science related events. Events range from astronomy to bridges building to anatomy to sound wave and much much more. Some events involve studying, while others involve building or lab work. The season begins in September Students will then prepare for competition for many months. We form 'regional' teams in December and those students go onto compete in invitational tournaments during December and January to prepare for the San Diego Regional in February. If we qualify for the state tournament based on our performance, we cut down to 1 state team of 15 students who move onto the state tournament.
Registration: "Pre" Registration has opened up here. Please fill out the pre-registration form so you can get all the future updates. We allow everyone who signs up to participate in Science Olympiad. Registration will open up in early September once all the coaching is sorted.
Selection Criteria: There is no magic way to make the SciOly team. No one thing that ensures you will make the roster. In general we are looking for the best and brightest. We value intelligence, hard work, attention to detail, team work, leadership and creative thinkers... Carmel Valley is full of these kinds of kids so competition for team spots is tight. It is recommended that students who want to be competitive for state team selection begin with three or four events. Team selections are made by the head coaches and approved by the steering committee based on student performance, attendance and teamwork.
Practice Schedule: Science Olympiad is a BIG commitment. Once on the team, students can expect to have practices after school or on evenings during Sept-Dec. Once the regional teams form, the schedule intensifies and student schedules vary depending on their events. Team members need to be prepared to make SciOly a top priority.
Team Size: A team is made up of 15 students. In 2025, there is no maximum team limit for attending regionals but a couple invitationals have team limits. CVMS usually sends 4-6 teams to regionals. State competition only allows 1 team per school. Deciding who is going to be on the state team will be discussed later.
